Wrexham see off Yeovil to reach third round

Wrexham vs Yeovil Town

Wrexham comfortably defeated a determined Yeovil Town to secure a place in the third round of the FA Cup, where they will face Shrewsbury Town.

The Dragons got ahead in the game after Joe Day was only able to deflect Ollie Palmer's header, which allowed the scorer to quickly react and put the ball in the net.

Yeovil almost scored when Jordan Young's free-kick hit the post, but then Andy Cannon extended Wrexham's lead by scoring from outside the penalty area.

In the additional time of the game, Sam Dalby concluded the victory by evading the Yeovil defence and skillfully lifting the ball over Day.

Both teams had a hard time making any definitive opportunities in the second half, with the rain adding to the difficulty. However, Wrexham managed to secure their win with their performance.

The team has something to anticipate as they prepare to face off against a League One team, Shrewsbury, in the third round of the competition. We can expect to see these matches take place from January 5th to 8th.

Yeovil had bad experiences at The Stok Racecourse as they were demoted after losing there last season, which was also the year that Wrexham secured promotion to League Two.

On Sunday's match, they went in as the top team of the National League South. Additionally, on their sideline was Rhys Murphy, who had previously scored three goals for the Glovers during a match against Wrexham in November 2019.

Both teams had previously faced each other only once in the FA Cup. Wrexham lost 4-1 to the opposing team in a first-round match at Huish Park in November 2003. After 20 years, Wrexham wanted to forget about that experience and aim for a different outcome.

Wrexham did not have loaned in Arsenal's goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo due to a hurt jaw. In his place, Mark Howard stepped up to be their goalkeeper.

Day, who is currently on loan from Newport County, would have been determined to outperform their Welsh rivals.

Wrexham was hit with a setback in the beginning as one of their defenders, Aaron Hayden, was forced to leave the field due to a calf strain. James Jones was then brought in to replace him as part of the defensive trio.

Yeovil struggled to challenge Howard for over thirty minutes, during which he had very little to do. However, he was quick to react and made a great save by fully extending his body to block Charlie Cooper's shot.

Young had a stroke of bad luck when his excellent free-kick struck the frame of the goal instead of going into the net, even though the goalkeeper Howard was unable to stop it.

Towards the end of the initial half, Wrexham scored once more. This occurred as Ben Tozer launched a lengthy throw-in, which was solely relieved to the periphery of the zone. As a result, Cannon blasted the ricocheting sphere through a group of players and past the obscured Day.

Yeovil started the second half with a lot of motivation, but unfortunately, they only managed to take a few shots from far away, which went over the bar. They had a great start to the half, with Frank Nouble being the main player who contributed to their offensive tactics.

As soon as the rain started to fall heavily, Wrexham regained some authority, and Jacob Mendy was unlucky when his shot with his left foot from beyond the box barely missed the left-hand post of Day.

Despite this, Wrexham was still vulnerable to a quick response, and Young's clever pass found Murphy, who had just come on the field, but unfortunately, Evans expertly executed a sliding tackle at the exact right moment.

Wrexham swiftly returned to the game, and, as Yeovil's defence retreated, Jones narrowly missed scoring with a dipping shot that skimmed past the goal.

After some great work by Mullin, Mendy had an opportunity to shoot but lost his footing and was unable to make the attempt. McClean's shot was also blocked by a defender and went over the goal.

Dalby added to the scoreline as Yeovil attempted to catch up, concluding a fast Wrexham defensive move and shooting the ball over the approaching Day and into the goal.

According to Phil Parkinson, the Wrexham manager:

During the initial half, our team had a relaxed and easy time but we must acknowledge Yeovil's efforts in making a comeback. This doesn't come as a surprise though, as they are a skilled team and are performing admirably in their league.

If your team is leading the pack in their respective league, it means they possess several positive qualities, including tenacity. Yeovil displayed remarkable resilience in the second half of their recent game, refusing to surrender despite the odds.

"We were struggling to make that last pass to finish the game as planned, until Dalby brilliantly scored a goal at the very end."
