Wrexham will learn lessons of Birmingham loss - boss Parkinson

Wrexham

Wrexham's coach, Phil Parkinson, expressed that the loss to Birmingham City served as a valuable lesson for his team in League One. He acknowledged that they struggled to cope with the pressure of the match.

The newly elevated North Wales team experienced their first defeat of the season, losing 3-1 to the Blues in front of a full crowd at St Andrew's.

Two goals by record signing Jay Stansfield and another from Tomoki Iwata were well-deserved results of the host team's strong performance.

However, Parkinson, whose team seemed poised to challenge the promotion favorites after Jack Marriott scored early, remarked that his players should have reacted more effectively when Chris Davies' team intensified their efforts, much to the delight of the lively home fans.

"Their initial goal hit us hard," mentioned Parkinson, whose team is still leading due to goal difference.

"We didn't assess the ball quickly enough leading up to the next two goals. When you allow skilled players like those on the Birmingham team some extra time, they will take advantage and show their talent."

"For us as a team, it's a valuable opportunity for growth. We’ve rarely let in a goal this season and haven’t trailed in any matches, but in crucial games over the past few years, we have fallen behind and managed to bounce back better than we did in this one."

Marriott scored the fourth goal of the season just under three minutes into the much-awaited match, indicating that Wrexham had unsettled Birmingham. Parkinson noted that the home team appeared "jittery" at the start, especially with their minority owner, Tom Brady, watching from the sidelines.

He went on to say, “Our performance showed that we were a team full of certainty and self-assurance. We should feel that way since we arrived here in first place.”

"However, the goal shifted the atmosphere in the stadium. They played really well after that, but we believe we could have performed better. It wasn’t due to a lack of effort on our part, but we need to learn from this experience and apply those lessons to our upcoming matches."

Losing is always hard to handle, but we need to have a realistic perspective on our journey. If we look back to the beginning of the season, after playing six matches, including our first three away at Bolton, Peterborough, and Birmingham, only losing once would have seemed like a positive outcome to us.

"They've invested more than any team not in the Premier League and have some talented players, but there are still aspects to enhance. It’s all about how we react. If we find ourselves in a similar tough situation in the future, can we perform better?"

Parkinson expresses his enthusiasm for the upcoming matches but acknowledges that Birmingham's financial resources have given them a significant advantage.

He mentioned, “For every player we pursued, other teams were either outbidding us or providing better salaries. It felt like our strategy was to just let them acquire whoever they wanted while we explored different options.”

"No one can match their spending in this division, and it would have been insane for us to try. If I were in their shoes, I would go for the best players available, and that's exactly what they've accomplished."

"While we are not overly confident about our own progress, we also need to be cautious when it comes to Birmingham. With the talent they possess, they will definitely be a tough challenge."

"They did well in that match, but there's still plenty of football left to play."
