Fans marvel at Wrexham’s rise as League One campaign begins in style

Wrexham

Some people used to say that all the excitement and glamour surrounding Wrexham off the field was not important and that the team would eventually go back to where they belonged, and the famous owners would lose interest.

Based on the outcome of the game against Wycombe, it's clear that Wrexham is on a winning streak. Wrexham 3.0 has leveled up to the League One edition, and despite two consecutive promotions, it seems like there is still room for improvement.

"When Ryan and Rob are around, there's a certain energy that fills the entire location," stated Phil Parkinson about the impact of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney on his players, the team, and the whole town. This was clearly noticeable even before the game started at STōK Cae Ras, also known as the Racecourse Ground, as the noise level increased to a peak.

The pair quickly stopped by the team's changing room before the game for a casual chat to help calm the players. The atmosphere was positive and it definitely seemed to be a morale boost for the team, who are facing heightened pressure. "It always gives us a boost," stated striker Steven Fletcher.

The Hollywood club has had a phenomenal rise in the past two seasons. People still have very high expectations, even though Wrexham is now in the same league as Birmingham, Huddersfield, and Charlton after 20 years. They joined the league with Wealdstone, Boreham Wood, and Dorking Wanderers two seasons ago.

Despite expectations of another promotion, there is a feeling within the club that it will not be easy, as Parkinson has emphasized. The one thing that is certain is that, being Wrexham, it will be an enjoyable experience. This was evident in the game against Wycombe, where Wrexham had the support of 13,214 enthusiastic fans.

In the first game of the season, Birmingham managed to secure a 1-1 draw with Reading thanks to a late penalty scored by Alfie May. The team, now in League One after being relegated from the Championship, fell behind when Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan scored right before halftime. Despite Ehibhatiomhan having a goal disallowed for offside in the second half, May was able to equalize with a penalty three minutes before the end of the match, earning the team a valuable point.

Huddersfield had a drama-free victory, defeating Peterborough 2-0. Antony Evans and Ben Wiles scored in the first half, giving new Terriers manager Michael Duff a great beginning. Rotherham, also relegated, suffered a 1-0 defeat against Exeter, with Caleb Watts scoring as a substitute with 20 minutes remaining.

Wrexham, who were being supported by co-owner Ryan Reynolds, defeated Wycombe in an exciting match at the SToK Cae Ras. Max Cleworth and Jack Marriott scored early goals for Wrexham, but Richard Kone managed to score for Wycombe. Substitute Steven Fletcher scored a late goal for Wrexham, and Sam Vokes set up a tense ending to the game.

Stockport, the team that won the championship, defeated Cambridge 2-0 thanks to goals from Louie Barry and Kyle Wootton. Bolton, who lost to Oxford in the League One play-off final, secured a 2-1 victory against Leyton Orient with a last-minute goal from Victor Adeboyejo, who had just been substituted onto the field.

Crawley, who were promoted through the play-offs, defeated Blackpool with a score of 2-1. Charlton secured a 1-0 victory against Wigan thanks to a late goal by Lloyd Jones. Bryant Bilongo, a new signing for Bristol Rovers, scored in stoppage time to secure a 1-0 win against Northampton at the Memorial Stadium.

Paudie O'Connor scored two goals to help Lincoln secure a 3-2 comeback victory against Burton. His second goal came in the final four minutes of the game, sealing the win for his team.

The manager emphasized that we can't expect things to be easy. In the past, success was never given to us, whether in the National League or League Two. We must be prepared to work hard for victories. Wycombe has a reputation for their determination, and they were even competing in the Championship recently.

After Wrexham easily defeated an experienced League One team with aspirations of making the playoffs, the possibility of achieving a third consecutive promotion seems like something out of a movie script. However, Wrexham's team is filled with players who have experience in League One and maybe even the Championship. Just a day before the match, they announced the signing of Ollie Rathbone, a record-breaking transfer from Rotherham who are also likely contenders for promotion.

In the beginning of the game, they took the lead quickly. James McClean passed the ball to Max Cleworth, who easily scored a goal and the crowd cheered loudly. The celebration continued as Jack Marriott scored a beautiful goal into the top corner after thirty minutes, causing even more excitement.

At first, Wycombe seemed like a minor character in a superhero movie, overshadowed by the main characters. Parkinson was in control, making strategic moves that paid off well. The newest addition to Wrexham, George Dobson, stood out in the midfield, supported by Andy Cannon and Elliot Lee. McClean cleverly positioned himself on the left side, while Ollie Palmer played aggressively as a striker. Could this strategy lead to success in League One?

Bromley had a successful debut in the EFL with a 2-0 victory against Harrogate. The Ravens, who advanced to the EFL through the play-offs after playing in the National League, scored their first EFL goal in the 62nd minute when Michael Cheek put the ball into the net. Kamarl Grant added a late second goal with a header to secure the win.

Cheltenham, who were demoted from League One last year, managed to resist a comeback from Newport and secured a 3-2 victory thanks to Joel Colwill's goal in injury time.

Fleetwood got off to a good start in League Two by winning 1-0 against Grimsby, and Port Vale started their push for promotion with a 2-0 victory over Salford, thanks to Ben Garrity's two goals.

But Carlisle, who also lost, were beaten 4-1 at Gillingham. Luke Molyneux scored two goals as Doncaster, defeated in the play-offs last year, set a strong start with a 4-1 victory over Accrington.

MK Dons, a team that also did not win in the play-offs, had their first match with new owners and sadly lost 2-1 at home to Bradford. The visitors scored two goals within the first 10 minutes. The takeover of the team by a group based in Kuwait, led by Fahad Al Ghanim, was finalized on Friday after being under the ownership of Pete Winkelman for a long time.

AFC Wimbledon overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat Colchester 4-2, Walsall narrowly defeated Morecambe 1-0, and Tranmere and Notts County ended their match in a scoreless draw.

Wrexham started to slow down as half-time approached, allowing the visitors to score a goal through Richard Kone's precise finish after the break. Fletcher, brought on by Parkinson as a substitute, scored a goal in the 83rd minute. However, the Welshman Sam Vokes managed to score again, making it 3-2. Despite the thrilling match, the most important thing was the win for Parkinson, Reynolds, McElhenney, and the packed crowd. We all knew it would be an exciting game, didn't we?

"In every season that I have played or coached in, the goal has always been to strive for the top position," Parkinson stated. "It's not about being unrealistic, because if you settle for average, you may just find yourself at the bottom. Therefore, we must always have aspirations and dreams."

It has been about 20 years since Wrexham last played in League One, but that long absence doesn't seem to hold much weight now. Their focus is solely on the bright future ahead.
