The Origins Of Wordle: How It Started

Wordle started off as a simple family game designed by software engineer Josh Wardle. He came up with the idea so he and his partner could enjoy a light-hearted word game during the pandemic. They soon recognized that there was something unique about this straightforward guessing game. After making some improvements, Wardle decided to share it with everyone on his website, Power Language.

The game launched in October 2021 and quickly gained popularity, reaching two million daily players by the year's end. Its viral success was largely due to how easily players could post their results without revealing any spoilers on Twitter and other social media platforms. In January 2022, Wardle received a lucrative offer from the New York Times to buy Wordle for a substantial amount of money. Kudos to Mr. Wardle for this achievement!

Which Words Are Not Allowed In Wordle?

You can enter almost any five-letter English word as a guess in Wordle, and it will be accepted. However, the daily solution is chosen from a much smaller selection of more commonly used five-letter words. While there are still thousands of potential answers, this ensures that the word won't be something rare like "THIOL," "CAIRD," or "MALIC" (which are all legitimate words).

Sometimes, the New York Times opts not to use certain words as answers for Wordle, possibly due to current events or political sensitivities. For instance, just after the announcement that Roe v. Wade could be overturned in the U.S., they replaced the planned word "FETUS" with "SHINE" for March 30th, believing that "fetus" would be too controversial given the recent developments.

The New York Times has made sure to avoid including what they view as inappropriate words as solutions in Wordle puzzles. However, you can still use any offensive words as your guesses, provided they are actual words found in the dictionary. Just keep in mind that those words will never be the correct answer.

Is Wordle Becoming Too Easy For You?

If you find Wordle becoming too simple, there are several methods to increase the difficulty. One option is to activate Hard Mode. To do this, simply click on the gear icon located in the upper right corner of the Wordle website. In Hard Mode, any letters that are highlighted in your guesses must be included in all subsequent attempts. This rule prevents you from relying on the common strategy of using pairs of words, such as "OUNCE" and "PAINS," to quickly check all five vowels at the start.

You can elevate the challenge by adopting what we refer to as "Ultra-Hard" rules. This means that every word you guess must be a plausible solution. For instance, if you were playing on Hard Mode and guessed "MOIST" with the "O" highlighted in yellow, you could still follow up with "POLAR," even though it clearly can't be the answer since you already know the "O" is in the wrong position. However, in "Ultra-Hard" mode, that's not permissible. You have to consider every clue and ensure that every word you choose could potentially be the correct answer.

If you find that Wordle has become too simple for you, there are plenty of other Wordle-like games on the internet that have emerged in the last year. One that we really enjoy is Worldle, where you have to identify a country just by looking at its shape. There's also Waffle, where you rearrange letters in a finished grid to fill in all the words; Moviedle, which plays a brief clip of a movie and asks you to guess the title within six tries; and Quordle, where you attempt to solve four Wordles simultaneously using the same guesses.
