Report | Wolves 2-3 Coventry

Wolves

The FA Cup run of the Wolves was brought to a devastating end when Coventry City snatched two goals in the final moments of injury time, allowing them to advance to the semi-finals.

Despite missing many important players, The Old Gold team managed to make a comeback after conceding a goal from Ellis Simms. Rayan Ait-Nouri was able to score a goal to tie the game, and then assist Hugo Bueno to give Wolves the lead just two minutes before the end of the game.

Gary O'Neil's team was not able to maintain their lead. In the last seven minutes of extra time, Simms scored a header from a short distance and in the 100th minute, Haji Wright curled an impressive shot into the goal, causing great disappointment to the fans in old gold who were watching at Molineux. Unfortunately, their journey in the competition came to an end in the quarter-final round.

It was an exciting Saturday afternoon as we faced each other in the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time in five years. As both teams started the game, there were opportunities for both sides within the first 15 minutes. However, despite Coventry's chance from Kasey Palmer's impressive cross and Wolves' early cut back from Ait-Nouri, neither team managed to score an early goal.

At the beginning of the match, Wright tried to score but the ball went wide of Jose Sa's post. Later on, Wolves had a good chance to score just before the halfway mark. Semedo played a part in this opportunity by keeping the ball in play and passing to Fraser. However, both Fraser and Ait-Nouri's shots were blocked. Afterwards, Mario Lemina tried to score but the ball missed the post.

Lemina made a great play by sending a fabulous ball over towards Sarabia, who then passed it on to Semedo with precision. Unfortunately, Semedo wasn't able to score as he aimed straight towards Bradley Collins who was guarding the goal. If only Semedo could have aimed for either side of the goalkeeper, the Wolves team would have been on their way to an opening goal.

The opportunities that had been presented earlier were insignificant in comparison to what Coventry had overlooked in minute 35. Kasey Palmer hit the ball, but it accidentally switched direction and ended up with Josh Eccles. He then delivered a pass to Simms, and all he had to do was lightly touch the ball into the goal since the goalkeeper was out of the way. Simms, however, unintentionally hit the ball with his heel, and it went towards the opposing goalkeeper, Sa, who was lying on the field. Sa was able to make a recovery and save the ball, which was a significant relief for his team.

There was another noteworthy occurrence in the first half. Coventry launched a counterattack and Wolves had Simms moving up, ready to make a play. However, they didn't realize that Milan van Ewijk was also there to back them up. Van Ewijk charged in and took a shot, but Sa swiftly flew out of his goal and managed to deflect the ball, just barely missing the net.

During the game, Wolves had an opportunity to score right before the first half ended, but unfortunately they were unable to successfully kick the ball into the net. Lemina managed to make a cross, but it ended up hitting Sarabia and bouncing all over the Coventry box for a prolonged time. Eventually, Fraser tried to nudge the ball towards the goal, but it missed its mark and went wide.

At the midway point of the game, the score between Wolves and Coventry remains tied at zero.

The unreserved style of play in the beginning persisted in the latter half and both teams had opportunities early on. Ait-Nouri collaborated with Lemina and missed the goal with a shot from his right foot, whereas Wright shot over the goal for the away team.

Nevertheless, it was the away team who scored the first goal. Liam Kitching headed a deep free-kick back across the goal and Simms managed to bundle it over the line. A thorough VAR examination followed, investigating any potential handball by Simms, but after some time, the examination was over and the goal was considered valid.

In some way, that didn't seem to alert them, and Wolves got away with it when Wright entered the field and aimed at Sa, causing Palmer to miss the goal when he curled the ball wide. This happened right after Matt Doherty, who had been subbed in, lost possession near the box.

The wolves had multiple opportunities to score, even after Doherty passed the free-kick from Sarabia by heading it to Ait-Nouri. The goal was wide open and Ait-Nouri had a chance to score, but unfortunately, he didn't make strong contact with the ball and it bounced off the post.

Even though Coventry had many opportunities, Sa saved his team repeatedly. He stopped the Sky Blues twice, as they took control due to the Old Gold giving away the ball frequently. The most significant save happened at the 82-minute mark when he prevented Kitching from scoring at the near post by making himself bigger.

The saves were extremely important because Wolves managed to score a goal soon after. Joao Gomes found some free space on the right side and Joel Latibeaudiere failed to deal with it. As a result, the ball bounced off him and landed perfectly for Ait-Nouri, who took the opportunity to score a goal. This allowed Wolves to have an equal score with the opposing team.

Luck can sometimes play a crucial role in football, as proven by the surprising turn of events moments after the equalizer was scored. Ait-Nouri, who was now playing in the winger position, impressively made his way forward and delivered a perfectly weighted pass to Bueno. The Spanish player displayed remarkable calmness and skill in converting the opportunity into a goal. This amazing play caused an uproar of excitement and chaos among the fans in the South Bank.

Nonetheless, the addition of nine extra minutes, mostly due to the VAR review of Coventry's initial goal, ultimately led to Wolves' defeat. Bobby Thomas headed a Coventry cross, and Simms had an unchallenged opportunity to nod the ball into the net, evening the score seven minutes into the extra time.

The game seemed to be heading towards extra time, but Wolves' hopes were crushed when Wright received the ball in the box. He cleverly used Kilman as leverage to curl the ball around him and into the far corner, out of reach of the goalkeeper Sa's dive. The Wolves players were sprawled out on the pitch, feeling defeated, as their journey came to a disappointing end.

Wolves suffered a disappointing home defeat against Coventry in a full-time match. Coventry came out on top with a 3-2 victory at the Wolves' home ground. It was a disappointing result for Wolves, who failed to secure a win in front of their home crowd. The game was closely contested, with both teams playing well. However, Coventry managed to score more goals and secure the win. Wolves will be hoping to bounce back from this defeat in their next game. They will need to work hard and make improvements to their performance if they want to get back to winning ways.
