Ciri revealed as the new protagonist for The Witcher 4 game

We had high expectations, and the Game Awards certainly met them. At the event, they premiered the long-anticipated trailer for the new CD Projekt Red game, The Witcher 4. This six-minute teaser offered an exciting glimpse of what we can look forward to.

The key point? Ciri is set to take on the role of the main character in the game. She is the adopted daughter of Geralt, the monster hunter who was the hero in the first three installments.

CJ Projekt Red, the team responsible for the incredibly popular Witcher series, has announced that the next installment, currently untitled, will kick off a new storyline featuring Ciri as the main character. In this upcoming game, she will set out on her own adventure to become a skilled monster hunter.

In the trailer, Ciri arrives at a village where a girl is believed to be chosen as a sacrifice for a monster in return for prosperity. Ciri intervenes, saving the girl and defeating the creature. However, upon her return, she discovers that the very girl she saved has been killed by the villagers instead. This grim twist is characteristic of the dark themes found in the Witcher games.

In the original games, Ciri showcased various abilities tied to her lineage from the Elder Blood, one of which was the ability to teleport.

It looks like those elements aren't present here. Instead, she utilizes a potion from the Witcher series to boost her skills and employs a few combat spells similar to those Geralt uses. Additionally, players will encounter a brand-new creature to battle: the bauk, inspired by Serbian folklore.

Why? This might be linked to the dramatic events at the conclusion of The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, where Ciri rejects her powers and, based on the choices players make in the game’s endings, chooses to train alongside Geralt to become a Witcher.

CD Projekt Red, the company responsible for the Witcher series, revealed in November that they are developing a new game, referred to as Polaris. While it will take place in the Witcher universe, they stated that Geralt will not be part of this installment. Instead, it will launch an entirely new trilogy within the franchise.

Choosing Ciri as the main character is a logical choice and a positive step in an industry that is increasingly embracing diverse heroes. The only downside is that we might have to wait until 2027 for its release.
