Paris 2024: USA and Netherlands seek to defend wheelchair basketball titles

Wheelchair basketball Paralympics

The United States is hoping to win their third consecutive gold medal, but they will have to compete against many other strong teams on August 31, 2024.

The United States is aiming to secure their third consecutive victory in the men's Paralympic games in Paris.

Wheelchair basketball at the Paralympics is an exciting and fast-paced event that fans love to watch. The competition for medals is fierce, with teams from around the world vying for victory at the Bercy Arena in Paris for the Paris 2024 games.

In the upcoming competition, there will be a total of sixteen teams competing, with more than 190 athletes participating. This is fewer teams than in past events, as at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, there were twelve men's teams and ten women's teams.

In the men's event, teams from Great Britain, Spain, the USA, Australia, France, the Netherlands, Germany, and Canada are competing. In the women's competition, the lineup includes teams from the Netherlands, Great Britain, the USA, China, Canada, Germany, Spain, and Japan.

Two groups of five players compete on the basketball court, with the basket set at the standard Olympic height. It is not shocking that teams from the USA and Canada have been the most successful in Paralympic basketball, considering North America's influence in the sport on a global scale.

The competition has been held in different ways at the Paralympic Games since 1960 (during 1960 and 1964, only men's teams participated, with two different disability categories), and the USA is in first place in the medal standings, with 13 gold medals, two silver medals, and eight bronze medals; Canada has achieved six gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal.

Israel started off strong in the early Paralympics, but has since lost its dominance. In more recent competitions, countries like the USA, Canada, Australia, and Great Britain have been leading the way for the men, while the Netherlands, Germany, USA, and Australia have been dominating the women's events.

The women from the Netherlands and the men from the United States are seeking their third consecutive Paralympic gold medals as defending champions when they compete in Paris.

Can Anyone Beat The Dream Team?

The wheelchair basketball team from the United States is doing really well. They won in Tokyo 2020 and Rio 2016, and proved they are strong contenders by winning the most recent World Championships title in 2022. They are definitely on top of their game and are heading to France as the team to beat.

They have a strong rivalry with the men's team from Great Britain, and emerged victorious in a thrilling final at the 2022 World Championship in Dubai.

USA star Steve Serio emphasized that the most admirable trait of their team is their ability to bounce back from challenges. He noted that they excel under pressure, showing their best performance when the game becomes toughest. Despite being behind at half-time in the final against GB, the team made strategic changes that ultimately led to their success.

Dutch Invincibles Aim To Stay Unbeaten

Similar to the American men's team, the women from the Netherlands are the ones to beat in Paris. The Dutch team took home the gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and have been victorious in the last two World Championships, held in Dubai in 2022 and Hamburg in 2018. They have also been dominating the European Championships in recent years.

Mariska Beijer is a key player on their offense, consistently performing well in big competitions. After winning six titles in a row at Worlds, European Championships, and Paralympics, she expressed her happiness and excitement.

"We are ecstatic and determined to keep this streak going. They are going to be a tough team to beat."

Japan Aims For Asia's First Paralympic Wheelchair Basketball Gold

Asia has not yet claimed a gold medal in wheelchair basketball at the Paralympic Games for either men or women. The closest any country has come to achieving this was during the Tokyo 2020 Games, when the host nation lost a thrilling final match to the USA with a score of 64-60.

The Japanese team's defeat was incredibly painful, but Renshi Chokai, one of their standout players, is turning it into motivation for his dream in 2024. Along the way, he has also emerged as a fashion trendsetter.

"He mentioned how a lot of athletes have been supporting Para sports," he stated. "I want to compete, attract more viewers, and grow a fan base. I aim to make Para sports look fashionable in today's time, inspired by its history." It's certain he will impress once again in France.

"British Supermums: Powering Through"

The Team Great Britain is improving, and they are motivated by some incredible women who balance professional sports careers with being mothers. Robyn Love and Laurie Williams, who are partners, competed for the European title in 2023, just five months after their daughter Alba was born.

Love expressed that being a parent helps you stay focused on what really matters. She is thankful for the chance to demonstrate that both mothers and fathers are capable of raising children.

The teams from Paris 2024 have been pretty good in men's wheelchair basketball in the past. They won a gold medal in 1984 and bronze medals in 1976, 1988, and 1992. They have also won three silver medals at the World Championships, with the most recent one in 2010.

After a period of poor performance lasting ten years, the team did not make it to the 2014 and 2018 World Championships. However, they have recently shown signs of improvement. Although they were eliminated early in the last World Championships, France had some good games and are eager to do well in front of their home crowd this summer.

"Over the past two years, the team has been preparing for the World Championships, European Championships, and the Paris 2024 Paralympics," explained head coach Karim El Guedda. "We have a new team and we hope to have the same players compete in the Paralympics. Our preparation has been going well."
