Wetherspoons stops selling San Miguel - and people are not happy

Wetherspoons stops selling San Miguel

People in the UK love to argue about just about anything, but there’s one topic they mostly agree on: a passion for affordable beer. So, it’s no surprise that there was widespread anger online when Wetherspoons revealed they were getting rid of a beloved option.

The well-known pub chain has decided to stop offering the Spanish pale lager San Miguel and will now serve the Italian beer Poretti instead.

The announcement follows the conclusion of the licensing agreement. Paul Davies, the CEO of Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company, expressed his disappointment with the decision and mentioned that they are taking steps to lessen the effects on their business.

"We take great pride in our numerous accomplishments over the past 15 years with MSM, greatly enhancing distribution and significantly increasing the volume of the San Miguel brand."

Naturally, social media users and dedicated San Miguel supporters weren't pleased with the decision. One even jokingly suggested they might hold a protest against the new move.

Another person exclaimed in a state of panic, "Wetherspoons has stopped serving San Miguel?!?!"

"I'm really disappointed to hear that! San Miguel is my all-time favorite," one fan expressed on Facebook, while another added, "As someone who only enjoys San Miguel from a spoon, this is a huge letdown."

On the other hand, some people didn’t seem bothered at all, with one commenter saying, “They have Corona available on draft, so who really cares about San Miguel?”

This follows a caution from the head of Wetherspoon about potential price hikes after the autumn Budget, as he mentioned that the pub chain's tax expenses are set to increase by two-thirds next year.

Tim Martin, the chairman of Wetherspoon, stated that he thinks "every hospitality business" intends to increase prices in order to cover rising expenses.

He stated that cost inflation, which had surged to high levels in 2022, gradually eased over the next two years. However, it has recently risen significantly once more after the Budget announcement.

"We believe that every business in the hospitality sector is likely to raise prices as a result."

"Wetherspoon will consistently strive to remain competitive."
