Wendy's in Reading: Opening date announced as fast food giant confirms UK return
US fast-food giant Wendy’s has confirmed exactly it will open in Reading this summer - marking its return to the UK after a 20-year hiatus.
The restaurant will open in the former Nationwide on the corner of Friar Street and Station Road on June 2.
The company plans to open four more UK restaurants after Reading, at locations including Oxford and Stratford.
Wendy’s became the second-largest burger restaurant in the US after it said it “de-throned” Burger King last year.
It closed all of its UK restaurants in 1999 but is reportedly planning to open hundreds over the next few years.
With 30 to 50 employees per restaurant, the company is aiming to create around 12,000 jobs at up to 400 sites.
Abigail Pringle, head of international operations, told media interviews over the weekend that she envisaged the restaurant growing to a “significant scale” in the UK, before expanding to Europe.
Rumours that Wendy's was planning to return to the UK - and open in Reading - first emerged in October 2019.
Plans for the unit were then submitted in June 2020, with more information revealed the following month.
Among the items on the menu will be Breakfast Baconators, towering triple-stacked beef burgers and Chocolate Frosty desserts.

The restaurant offers huge American portions, including the whopping Pretzel Bacon Pub Triple which is more than 1,500 calories.
There will also be exclusive menu additions for the UK, including vegetarian items.
Wendy’s will also be partnering with Uber Eats to provide delivery options.
