Wayne Rooney BBC exit confirmed as ex-Manchester United striker set for new job
Wayne Rooney made it official that he is stepping down from his position at the BBC to go back to England and get ready for the upcoming Championship season as the head coach for Plymouth Argyle.
Rooney, who had not been coaching since he was fired from his job at Birmingham in January, was chosen as the new head coach of Plymouth last month. Argyle had managed to stay in the Championship on the last day of the 2023/24 season, ironically causing Birmingham to be relegated.
However, despite these events, Rooney had accepted an offer to be a commentator for the BBC during Euro 2024. After commentating on several games, such as England's recent 1-1 match against Denmark, Rooney announced that he will no longer be working with the BBC after Belgium and Ukraine's goalless draw on Wednesday.

Gary Lineker revealed that this would be Rooney's final appearance as a pundit for the Euros and asked him about his upcoming job. Rooney shared that he would be flying home the next day and would be starting his new job in Plymouth on the 3rd of July.
Rooney was questioned about the recently announced schedule for the Championship. Plymouth's first match will be against Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday, August 11, followed by games with Hull, QPR, and Stoke within the initial month of the season.
He replied, "Yes, the enthusiasm was definitely present today. Looking at the schedule, you can't help but get excited for the opening games, the Christmas matches, and everything else. I'm really looking forward to it."
Alan Shearer jokingly teased, "Just wait until the pundits start picking on you!" before Gary Lineker wrapped up with, "Good luck, Wayne. We hope everything goes well for you."
