Viewers of Waterloo Road felt let down following the premiere of the new series that was broadcast on Tuesday night.

The series was originally cancelled in 2015, but after gaining popularity again during the initial COVID lockdown, it made a comeback in 2023 after being off the air for eight years.

Returning for its 14th season, the show has introduced a fresh twist with comedian Jason Manford coming on board as part of the cast.

Fans felt let down after the actor's first performance as the new headteacher, Steve Savage.

Fans took to Twitter to express their opinions, calling the new series 'terrible' and 'unbelievable.' They joked that Jason definitely wouldn't be receiving any BAFTA awards for his performance.

Viewers have criticized the latest season of Waterloo Road, calling it 'terrible' and 'unbelievable.' The addition of comedian Jason Manford to the cast has not helped, as negative feedback followed after Tuesday's episode.

When actor Steve Savage stepped into the role of the new headteacher, it left many fans feeling let down after his first appearance.

They remarked: "This is really bad. Jason Manford isn't likely to earn a BAFTA for his performance anytime soon. I’d suggest he focus on comedy, but that's not particularly funny either. And those braces... what were they thinking?"

I've been a fan of @BBCOne #WaterlooRoad since it first started, but the first episode of this new series is just ridiculous. It doesn't feel realistic at all. What went wrong?

"I’m not sure why it’s still airing, but #WaterlooRoad is about as bad as kids' television; and why is Jason Manford’s character always got his hands shoved in his pockets?"

The premiere of the new season of #WaterlooRoad has aired, and I'm still unsure about @JasonManford's character. Does he have a hidden agenda? I'm trying to pace myself and not binge-watch the entire series on iPlayer in just two days, so please, no spoilers!

Another comment mentioned: "There isn't enough Donte for my taste. Also, where's Izzy?"

On the other hand, there were some favorable comments, with one person writing: "I've tuned into the new season of #WaterlooRoad and I'm really enjoying @JasonManford's role as Steve Savage xx."

I've only watched the second episode of the latest #WaterlooRoad, but it's been amazing so far! Steve makes an excellent headteacher and really reminds me of Rachel.

In February, it was announced that Jason would be joining the cast, stepping in for the current headmistress, Kim Campbell, portrayed by Angela Griffin.

Fans took to Twitter to express their opinions, describing the new series as "terrible" and "unrealistic." They humorously remarked that Jason would likely not be receiving any BAFTAs for his performance.

On the bright side, there were some favorable comments, such as one viewer who wrote: "I'm really enjoying the latest season of #WaterlooRoad, and @JasonManford's portrayal of Steve Savage is fantastic!"

When discussing his participation in the show, Jason expressed, "It’s such a pleasure to become a part of the Waterloo Road team, especially in my hometown of Manchester."

When discussing his addition to the cast, Jason expressed, "It’s truly a delight to be part of the team on Waterloo Road, especially since it’s taking place in my hometown of Manchester."

During the lockdown, my kids and I watched the entire series on iPlayer. It's an amazing and classic show, so I feel incredibly proud to now be associated with its legacy. As a child, I dreamed of becoming a teacher, and now that I've become a headteacher, I realize I probably wouldn't have been very good at it!

Cameron Roach, the Executive Producer of Waterloo Road and the creator of Rope Ladder Fiction, expressed excitement about Jason Manford joining the cast, as the series makes its comeback for a fourth season on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Jason is an incredible comedic actor who has completely captured the essence and vibe of the show. We're excited for everyone to experience the characters of Steve Savage and his son Billy!

Like all the adults in our cast, Jason has been a motivating and friendly mentor for our younger actors and crew members. We really appreciate that a new wave of Northern talent can develop their skills while working alongside well-known professionals.

"The legacy of Waterloo Road continues to grow and thrive."
