Thailand hosts 40th anniversary celebration of Chevening awards

UK news

In January 2024, the British Embassy in Bangkok worked with the Thailand Chevening Alumni Association to organize an event celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Chevening program. The ceremony took place at the British Club in Bangkok, where awards were given to recognize the achievements and contributions of 40 Thai Cheveners who have made a positive impact on society and helped strengthen the relationship between the UK and Thailand.

The gathering brought together Cheveners from different fields such as global affairs, social justice, environmentalism, media, entrepreneurship, and others. Dr. Lalida Pariyakanok, the head of the Thai Red Cross Eye Bank and one of the earliest Chevening scholars in Thailand, made an appearance as well. The event offered a chance for Cheveners in Thailand to come together, catch up, and exchange knowledge and insights.

Mark Gooding, the UK's representative in Thailand, stated:

The alumni from the Chevening program are experts in their respective fields. They are dedicated to promoting progress in Thailand and play a crucial role in strengthening the relationship between the UK and Thailand. When we collaborate on common objectives, they provide valuable perspectives, connections, honest feedback, and camaraderie. Their contributions are vital to our work in Thailand, and I am exceptionally proud of our Chevening network. I am convinced that we should seek out ways to assist each other in our endeavors.

During the unique panel discussion, former Chevening scholars talked about their time as Chevening scholars and how it contributed to their success in different fields.

Pongsadhorn Pokpermdee, who served as the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Public Health from 2000-2001 and was a member of the Chevening program cohort during that time, expressed that...

The Chevening Scholarship opens up numerous opportunities for me. Although the journey to receive this scholarship may not be easy, the obstacles I face along the way help to strengthen my self-assurance. Attending a university in the UK and being surrounded by peers from around the world inspires innovative thinking and enhances our study methods. Experiencing diverse perspectives in a welcoming society has enabled me to explore ways in which we can enhance our local communities.

Karuna Buakumsri, a journalist who was part of the Chevening program in 1996 to 1997, shared:

During the interview, I was asked about my potential impact on Thai society. I admitted that I wasn't sure at the time, but I was eager to demonstrate my abilities. Being awarded the Chevening Scholarship was a challenge for me to showcase my potential. This scholarship has introduced me to new friends and expanded my perspective through exposure to different environments, helping me to gain a deeper understanding of humanity.

Kornkanok Wathanabhoom, a legal advisor for the Mekong region at Earthrights International and a member of the 2018-2019 Chevening program, mentioned:

The Chevening Scholarship offers a chance for all individuals, not just the top students, to pursue opportunities for leadership and personal growth. The variety of programs available are engaging and enriching, providing us with valuable skills that can benefit both our professional development and the progression of our nation. With the knowledge gained from this scholarship, we can contribute to the advancement of Thailand as a whole.

Chatchavej Chitvarakorn, who served as the Managing Partner at Siam Premier International Law Office Limited from 2003-2004 and was part of the Chevening cohort, expressed:

Despite being in the private industry, I am happy to be one of the factors that have helped boost the country's business and economy. The scholarship has taught me valuable ways of thinking. Chevening is a major scholarship program that covers all expenses. Our efforts have resulted in the creation of communities of Chevening scholars in Thailand and other countries, forming strong connections.

The night ended with the Chevening networking event, where Cheveners had the opportunity to catch up while sampling delicious British traditional cuisine.

The Chevening Scholarship, which is fully funded by the UK government, was established as the 'Pym Package' in 1983 under the UK Foreign Secretary. To date, there have been 57,000 Chevening scholars, with over 600 of them being from Thailand. Cheveners from various countries have played a key role in making important contributions to their respective home countries.

The scholarships provide funding for one-year taught master's programs at universities in the UK for individuals who show promise in becoming future leaders, decision-makers, and influencers.

The Chevening program is open for applications every year from August to October. For additional details, please visit https://www.chevening.org/apply/
