GDF Report 2024

UK news

The 2024 report shows that there are three different groups in England, two in Cumbria and one in Lincolnshire, who are participating in the program to understand the potential implications of hosting a GDF. This program stands out in the UK because it relies on the active support of the community to move forward. NWS is dedicated to providing the necessary information for people to make a well-informed choice.

In order to build a GDF, we need a good location as well as a community that is supportive. We have already started many studies and surveys to gather data. This information will help us decide where to do more research, like drilling deep holes to explore the geology. This will ensure that we can build, run, and close a GDF safely. Our initial findings show that all the areas we are studying have the potential to be a good site for a GDF.

Local areas have seen positive outcomes from receiving funding early on, with over £7 million going towards various projects in Cumberland and Lincolnshire. Some examples of supported initiatives include the Winter Warmth Fund and the Bootle and District First Responders in South Copeland, financial assistance for the Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team in Mid Copeland, and community-driven projects like an adventure playground in Theddlethorpe.

The town or city chosen to have a GDF will receive a lot of extra money, possibly worth millions of pounds. This money will be used to help the community in various ways, like improving schools and job training programs, building better roads and public transportation, or creating new recreational spaces. Having a GDF in the area will also bring in lots of new jobs and help the economy grow for years to come.
