Is Uglies 2 happening? What we know about a potential Pretties movie

Uglies

After quickly binge-watching the newly released Uglies movie on Netflix, all we can think about is Uglies 2.

Inspired by Scott Westerfield's book series of the same name, the film is set in a dystopian world where everyone is initially labeled as "ugly." Upon turning 16, individuals undergo significant, compulsory cosmetic surgery to transform into "Pretties." The story follows Tally Youngblood and delves into the unsettling truths that lie beneath the surface of becoming a "Pretty."

Are we going to see a film adaptation of Uglies 2, also known as Pretties? Here’s what we’ve learned about a possible sequel to Uglies up to this point.

Is Uglies 2 Officially Confirmed?

While Netflix hasn't officially announced Uglies 2 yet, the conclusion of the movie certainly suggests the possibility of a follow-up.

Scott Westerfeld is the author of the Uglies series, which includes four books. The second book is titled Pretties, and the third is called Specials. His latest addition to the series, Extras, serves as a companion to the original Uglies storyline.

Westerfield returned to the same setting in his Imposter series, which means there's a wealth of content that could be explored in future films!

In a recent discussion, Joey King, the lead and executive producer of Uglies, mentioned, “There are additional books. So many more books. There's always various worlds where different events take place."

She expressed her enthusiasm, saying, "We're thrilled for everyone to experience this new release. We're looking forward to what lies ahead for these characters and can't wait to hear what the audience thinks. We're truly savoring this moment."

Of course, the future of a Pretties movie will largely depend on how the first Uglies film performs on Netflix. Nonetheless, we are optimistic about the possibility!

Release Date For Potential Uglies 2

As mentioned earlier, we'll need to be patient for a bit longer until we get official news about whether Netflix plans to return to that universe with more movies.

Creating a feasible timeline for a potential sequel is further complicated by the numerous delays Uglies faced during production. There were reshoots that needed to take place in 2024, three years after the initial filming was completed in 2021.

If a Pretties movie were to be made, we think it might be released as soon as 2026. Of course, this is purely conjecture (or rather, wishful thinking) for now!

Just a heads up, there are spoilers for Pretties in this section.

Aside from the events surrounding Peris in the film's conclusion (where Chase Stokes' character experiences an event not present in the books), Netflix's adaptation of Uglies largely adheres to the narrative of the original novel.

In the novel "Pretties," we follow Tally as she navigates her existence as a “Pretty.” However, beneath the surface of this seemingly ideal life, there’s always something that feels a bit strange.

When Tally receives a message from her past, she comes to a startling realization about what’s lacking in her life as a "Pretty." This forces her to confront difficult truths while also struggling to survive, as the authorities attempt to suppress anyone who knows the dark truths behind being a "Pretty."

While there's no official word yet on a possible Pretties movie, we anticipate that the following cast members would likely reprise their roles in a sequel:

There's a good chance we might see Chase Stokes return as Peris, depending on what happens after that rough fall at the end of the movie. Since this isn't part of the book series, we're optimistic about his return in a possible sequel to Uglies.

If a Pretties movie were to align with the format of Westerfield's novels, we could expect the introduction of new characters, especially those portraying the Crims from the second book, particularly their leader, Zane.

We'll keep you updated as soon as we receive any news about a possible Pretties movie!
