Tyreek Hill is detained by police before Dolphins game. Officer is subsequently placed on leave

Miami Gardens police detained Tyreek Hill, a player for the Miami Dolphins, by handcuffing him and forcing him to lie facedown on a street near the team's stadium. This happened after Hill was pulled over for driving too fast and recklessly on Sunday morning before the Dolphins' season opener. The incident left the talented wide receiver confused and led to a police officer being suspended from duty.

The individual, whose name was not revealed, was one of a group of at least three who were involved in apprehending Hill. A few spectators witnessed Hill being placed in handcuffs and recorded the incident on their way to the game, causing it to spread rapidly across social media platforms.

Stephanie V. Daniels, the director of Miami-Dade Police, stated that she had initiated an internal investigation.

After the game, Hill was informed that the officer had been placed on leave until the investigation is completed. In response, Hill stated, "This should give you all the information you need."

Defensive tackle Calais Campbell was also briefly detained after helping his teammate: "It was expected given the circumstances."

Hill, who expressed his admiration for law enforcement and dreams of becoming a police officer after his football career, stated he was completely unaware of the reasons why the police decided to handcuff him.

"I wasn't rude because my mom taught me to be respectful," Hill explained. "I didn't use bad language. I didn't do any of that. As I mentioned, I'm still trying to understand it, man."

Hill shined during the game for the Dolphins, grabbing seven passes for 130 yards. This included an impressive 80-yard touchdown that played a key role in Miami's comeback victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars. To celebrate his touchdown, Hill mimicked being handcuffed as part of his celebratory dance.

Hill, who is a person of color, stated that he did not want to use his fame to escape the predicament. He questioned what might have occurred if he were not a professional football player.

"I don't want to make it about race, but sometimes it can become uncertain in those situations," he explained. "If I wasn't Tyreek Hill, who knows what could have happened. I just followed my uncle's advice in moments like that: 'Just listen, keep your hands on the steering wheel, and listen.'"

Daniels stated earlier on Sunday that she asked for a quick examination of the information regarding the incident. She also mentioned that the department will check any body camera footage that is available.

In a subsequent comment, Daniels expressed his dedication to being open and responsible to the community in regards to any issues involving his officers.

Hill mentioned that everything occurred unexpectedly and quickly, taking him by surprise.

"I'm grateful that my teammates were there to help me in that moment because I was feeling isolated," Hill stated.

Campbell mentioned he was on his way to Hard Rock Stadium when he noticed Hill being handcuffed, so he pulled over to offer assistance. The former NFL player of 17 years also ended up being placed in handcuffs after allegedly not following the officers' instructions.

"I witnessed what I believe was an unnecessary use of force, so I decided to step out of the vehicle in an attempt to calm the situation," Campbell stated, describing the incident as "a little over the top."

Hill, who was the top receiver in the NFL in 2023, mentioned that he had a conversation with his wife and family before the game started, after he was held up.

His representative, Drew Rosenhaus, described it as a "devastating circumstance" during an interview on ESPN.

Rosenhaus was shocked by how the situation had progressed to the point where Tyreek was in handcuffs and on the ground with the police. He expressed his concern and said they would be looking into it further. He emphasized that their main priority is Tyreek's well-being, both physically and mentally, as he was deeply upset by the events.

A representative from the NFL named Brian McCarthy mentioned that they have been speaking with the Dolphins, but chose not to provide any additional information.
