Tyreek Hill is detained by police before Dolphins game. Officer is subsequently placed on leave

Tyreek Hill, a player for the Miami Dolphins, was arrested and taken into custody after being pulled over for speeding and reckless driving early Sunday morning near the team's stadium in Miami Gardens. The incident occurred before the Dolphins' first game of the season and left Hill confused. As a result, a police officer involved in the arrest has been suspended from duty.

The police officer, whose identity remains unknown, was just one of three officers involved in apprehending Hill. Several onlookers witnessed Hill being placed in handcuffs and recorded video as they were heading to the game. The footage spread quickly on social media.

Miami-Dade Police Chief Stephanie V. Daniels stated that she has initiated an internal investigation.

Hill commented after the game that the officer was put on leave while the investigation is ongoing, he added, "That should give you all the information you need."

Defensive tackle Calais Campbell was included in the group of players who were also involved in the incident, and he was briefly detained after stepping in to help his teammate. He commented, "It's logical considering the circumstances."

Hill, who admires police officers and has dreams of becoming one after his football career, expressed confusion over why he was detained in handcuffs by the police.

"I wasn't rude because my mom taught me better," Hill explained. "I didn't use bad language or act in that manner. I'm still working on understanding it all, you know what I mean."

Hill played exceptionally well in the game for the Dolphins, receiving seven passes for 130 yards. One of his catches was an impressive 80-yard touchdown that contributed to Miami's comeback victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars. After scoring, Hill celebrated by pretending to be handcuffed.

Hill, who is African American, mentioned that he didn't want to use his fame to avoid the situation, but questioned how things would've played out if he wasn't a professional football player.

"It's a sensitive topic, but sometimes things can get tricky when race is involved," he explained. "If I wasn't Tyreek Hill, who knows what could have happened. I just made sure to follow my uncle's advice in those situations: quietly listen and keep your hands on the steering wheel."

Daniels expressed in a message on Sunday that she asked for a quick examination of the information about the incident. She also mentioned that the department would look into any body camera footage that is available.

In a subsequent declaration, Daniels stated: "I am dedicated to being open and responsible to the community in any situation concerning my officers."

Hill mentioned that everything occurred very quickly and took him by surprise.

"I feel grateful that my teammates were there to help me during that tough time, as I was feeling isolated," Hill shared.

Campbell explained that he was driving towards Hard Rock Stadium when he noticed Hill being arrested and decided to intervene. He also ended up being arrested by the officers, who claimed it was because he didn't follow their instructions.

"I witnessed what I believe was an unnecessary level of aggression, so I decided to step out of the vehicle in an attempt to calm the situation down," Campbell explained, describing the incident as "quite intense."

Hill, who was the top receiver in the NFL in 2023, mentioned that he talked to his wife and relatives after he was taken into custody and before the game started.

His representative, Drew Rosenhaus, described it as a "devastating scenario" on ESPN.

Rosenhaus was shocked and concerned about how the situation ended with the person in handcuffs and being held on the ground by the police. He mentioned that they will be investigating the situation and looking out for Tyreek, but didn't make any accusations at this moment. The priority is for Tyreek to be okay physically and mentally as he was upset about what happened.

Brian McCarthy, who speaks for the NFL, mentioned that they have been talking to the Dolphins. However, he chose not to give any more details on the matter.
