Tottenham player ratings: Moore magnificent as Maddison proves point
The Brazilian calmly slotted the ball into the center of the goal after Lucas Bergvall and James Maddison were brought down by Maxim Dekker.
Teenager Mikey Moore turned in another impressive performance on the wing, while Fraser Forster proved his worth in goal with a couple of excellent saves.
Here's our assessment of the Spurs players...
He showcased his skills by making impressive saves in both halves to thwart Alexandre Penetra and Mayckel Lahdo. He quickly sprinted to the edge of his area to cut off yet another threatening play.
Maintained control even in crowded spaces. At times challenged by the energetic Ernest Poku, who is a key threat for AZ, but managed to defend effectively.
He experienced a tough moment when Poku stole his wallet, but Rodrigo Bentancur came to his rescue to save him from embarrassment. Aside from that incident, he played solid defense, stepping in at crucial times to make key plays.
Consistent both with the ball and without it, Spurs secured a much-appreciated clean sheet.
Brought the ball forward from the back and teamed up effectively with the energetic Moore during the second half.
Crucial on both sides of the field. Created the opportunity that led to the penalty with a perfectly threaded pass, then quickly sprinted back just a few minutes later to stop Poku's attempt on goal.
Set up a fantastic opportunity for Werner with a clever pass from the outside of his foot and earned a penalty after being taken down by Dekker. He was constantly making intelligent runs, both on and off the ball.
It seemed like he had something to prove after being substituted at halftime on Saturday. He was energetic and difficult for AZ to deal with during the first half. It looked like he stepped aside during the penalty, giving Richarlison an opportunity to score.
Put on another impressive performance that lived up to the excitement, especially after shifting to the left side for the second half. Generated several promising chances and took a shot at the goalkeeper.
He let a fantastic chance to net his first goal for Spurs slip away when he directed his header off-target from just five yards out at the back post.
He struggled again to find the net, missing two good opportunities in the first half. He could have provided an assist early in the game, but Moore directed his excellent cross off target. He was substituted at halftime, which likely won't help his confidence.
Kicked off his season by confidently converting a penalty and showed a lot of energy throughout the game. He managed to steal the ball from the defender, creating a solid opportunity for Werner in the first half.
Brennan Johnson (substituted for Werner at the 45-minute mark) received a rating of 7.
He quickly made his presence felt with a run to the back post and a shot that was deflected. He also set up Richarlison in a fantastic position when he really should have taken the shot himself.
Dominic Solanke (replaced by Richarlison in the 64th minute) received a rating of 6.
Maintained good possession of the ball and applied pressure from the front.
Dejan Kulusevski (Bergvall 72’) received a rating of 7.
Generated a great opportunity for Wilson Odobert during stoppage time in yet another outstanding performance.
Pape Matar Sarr (replaced by Maddison in the 72nd minute) received a rating of 6.
Challenging Maddison for a starting position in the match against Crystal Palace this Sunday.
Wilson Odobert (substituted in for Moore in the 87th minute) received a rating of 7.
He came back from his injury to play in the last few minutes and made two near misses. His first shot got blocked, and then he nudged the ball wide from just a few yards out after a nice play with Udogie and Kulusevski.
