Tottenham hit back late on to beat Crystal Palace
Tottenham secured a win on their home ground against Crystal Palace, scoring three goals in just 11 minutes of the second half. This victory ended their recent streak of losses or draws.
The squad led by Ange Postecoglou was on the path towards another consecutive loss when Eberechi Eze returned from injury and skillfully scored for Oliver Glasner's team at the 59th minute.
Brennan Johnson, who replaced a player on the field, played a crucial role in helping Spurs regain the upper hand in the match. He was able to make a fantastic pass that allowed Timo Werner to score the equalizing goal in the 77th minute. Not long after, Cristian Romero was able to score the second goal with a powerful header.
Captain Son Heung-min finished the goal-scoring with just two minutes left on the clock, courtesy of an assist from Johnson. This came as a crucial victory for the hosting team in their struggle to secure a place in the Champions League.
The Spurs team had a period of 14 days to get ready for their upcoming match, but faced a Crystal Palace team that was feeling confident due to the appointment of their new manager, Glasner. He had just emerged victorious in his first game as their boss when they played against Burnley at home in the past week.
The guests had a more promising beginning as Jordan Ayew missed the target with his shot, and Jean-Philippe Mateta had his attempt deflected by Emerson Royal.
Postecoglou's team gradually began to work well together, with Son almost receiving a good opportunity but instead becoming the person who created a chance that could have resulted in the first goal.
In the 19th minute, Rodrigo Bentancur managed to retrieve the ball and passed it to Son who then gave it to Werner for a potential scoring opportunity. Unfortunately, when Werner tried to move around Sam Johnstone, the goalkeeper successfully stopped him.
The game quickly resumed on the opposite side when Jefferson Lerma aimed his shot, which altered the trajectory right in the way of Daniel Munoz. However, Guglielmo Vicario valiantly hurled himself in front to block the attempt from the wing-back of Palace.
After thirty minutes of play, Ayew attempted a shot but Vicario made an impressive save. However, the home crowd became dissatisfied when the offside flag was raised.
Spurs dominated the possession in the first half, possessing 82 percent of the ball. However, they only managed to take one shot on target against a well-arranged Palace team playing in a 3-4-3 formation under their newly appointed coach.
Tottenham stepped up their pace in the second half, with Werner making a shot towards the goal. He also made an appeal for a penalty at the 53rd minute mark.
Werner swiftly entered the region, but was apprehended by Daniel Munoz. Despite this, referee John Brooks granted a corner, and after reviewing the decision, VAR chose not to interfere.
Son kept trying to score, but his first attempt hit the post after being passed by Dejan Kulusevski. Eze had a chance to take a free-kick when he found some space on the field. The position was dangerous enough for Palace to get an advantage.
Bentancur received a yellow card for his sly offense, but things got even worse for Spurs when Eze skillfully placed the free-kick around the wall and past Vicario to score an impressive seventh goal of the season.
As soon as the match began, Postecoglou looked to his reserves and Johnson was called onto the field. Shortly after entering the game, he missed a great opportunity by side-footing the ball over the net.
The son attempted to score but his shot was not on target. Later on, Tottenham was able to score due to Johnson's persistent effort.
In the 77th minute, Johnson managed to regain possession from Joachim Andersen and beat Lerma before passing the ball to Werner at the back post to score and equalize the game.
Werner had not scored a goal in English football since April 2022, but Spurs managed to rapidly respond and make the score 2-1.
James Maddison delivered a lofted pass into the box that Romero headed in for a goal. Son then neatly put the ball into the lower corner to score his 13th goal of the season and complete the scoring.
