Rare Werner goal inspires comeback win for Tottenham against Palace

Have you ever wondered what it was like to attend the wedding in Cana where water was transformed into wine? Can you imagine being present in Smyrna when St Polycarp's body remained unharmed by flames? Perhaps you're curious about the supposed healing powers of the holy waters in Lourdes. Miracles have happened before, and recently, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium bore witness to an utterly unexpected one - when Timo Werner managed to score.

Once again, Tottenham managed to escape without being caught, which has become a recurring situation for them recently.

Just before the hour mark, they were losing to Eberechi Eze. However, the team quickly responded with a goal from Werner, who scored his first goal for the club, followed by a header from Cristian Romero and a cool finish by Son Heung-min. This victory puts the pressure on fourth place Aston Villa and increases the gap between them and Manchester United by six points, ahead of Sunday's Manchester derby.

The game was a close call, but Oliver Glasner believes that Crystal Palace shouldn't be worried about possibly getting demoted with performances like this. While Glasner preferred a 3-4-2-1 formation, the team's approach was similar to what Roy Hodgson would have done: let the other team control the ball, stay solid defensively, and try to score on the break. They ended up with only 20% of the ball possession.

According to Glasner, we performed excellently for around one hour and ten minutes. We adhered to our strategy and exhibited strong defensive skills. However, we could have displayed more self-assurance when controlling the ball.

Palace has allowed 19 goals during the final 15 minutes of games this season. Tottenham's impressive start to the campaign has faded away.

The Palace team was hard-working, while the Spurs team struggled to find their rhythm in the first half of the game. The only chance for a goal was quite challenging, which made it seem nearly impossible to score. This opportunity was given to Werner.

It's painful to see a German player contemplate a chance. Their shoulders tense up, their steps become rigid, and a sense of discomfort fills the stadium. They're the type of person who can be signing Christmas cards without a problem, but then suddenly struggle to write their own name, experiencing a mental block that makes it difficult to do something they usually do effortlessly.

Werner had a lot of time to ruminate on his unsuccessful attempt after Son freed him up twenty minutes in. Werner ran all the way from his own half, continued charging forward, veered to the right, and appeared to have successfully gone past Sam Johnstone, only for the goalkeeper to push aside his shot. Although Johnstone's goalkeeping was noteworthy, this marked Werner's twelfth shot during his fifth league start after he signed on loan with the team from RB Leipzig in January. Unfortunately, none of his attempts had resulted in a goal.

According to Ange Postecoglou, Timo didn't score in the first half, but he kept pressuring the opponents. Scoring can boost morale and ease nerves, but Timo's strong and active playing style, minus the missed opportunity, was commendable.

In the second half, Son took a shot that hit the post but unfortunately, Tottenham Hotspur ended up falling behind at the 59-minute mark. Crystal Palace has been missing Eze during this season, as his ability to push forward was evident when he drew a free-kick that he expertly placed into the top corner. Although it was a fantastic goal - his sixth of the season - there are doubts about the positioning of Guglielmo Vicario and his wall, as neither seemed to cover the right side of the goal.

With only 13 minutes left in the match, a momentous occasion occurred. Brennan Johnson stumbled in from the right side, delivering a low cross, and with little time to react and limited choices, Werner managed to kick the ball through a wide-open net. The warm rays of sun shone through the passing clouds, illuminating the elation felt throughout the north London area.

Romero agreed with James Madison's floating pass to score a goal for Spurs right away. Later on, Son secured the victory for the team by executing a clever counter-attack.

The win wasn't very convincing, but it's not something that people will remember in the future. The important thing is that Timo Werner scored on that day.
