Jamie Redknapp has leapt to the defence of Josh Dasilva for his horror tackle on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg that left the Tottenham man with a gruesome gash on his shin as Brentford crashed out of the Carabao Cup.

Dasilva, who was the Bees' star performer in the quarter-final win over Newcastle, was shown a straight red card by Mike Dean on Tuesday night for his clumsy challenge that left an infuriated Hojbjerg in a heap.

Dean had initially waved play to continue before VAR told the match official to check the incident again, with the replays showcasing how bad the tackle was.

Spurs were comfortably 2-0 up at the time, thanks to goals from Moussa Sissoko and Son Heung-min, and were managing the game before Dasilva lost control of the ball in his own half.

In an attempt to evade Hojbjerg's tackle, Dasilva appears to try a chop to change direction but ends up clattering the Dane and leaving a gash on the midfielder's leg, who needed to be held back by his team-mates following Dasilva's dismissal.

Close ups of Hojbjerg's leg showed the damage caused by the Brentford man, as he winced in pain while heading straight to the medical room at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

And while Dasilva was rightly penalised with a straight red card, Redknapp insists there was no malicious intent in the tackle on Hojbjerg.

Redknapp told Sky Sports after the game: 'It’s a really interesting one. Do I think it’s a red card? Yes, because he has endangered an opponent. But does he mean it? Absolutely not.

'I think he's got the skill and he almost tries to chop it between his legs. But then almost loses control of his body and his right leg comes out. If you stop [the replay] it on the contact, it’s horrendous.

'But did he mean to do it? No. Most of the players I've played football with, if they're right-footed, you tackle with your right foot. He's left-footed so he wouldn't even need to tackle with his right foot. If you look at his [Hojbjerg] leg and it’s a right mess.

'But I don't believe for one second that Josh Dasilva has meant to do him but it looks really bad I get that.'

Dasilva's manager, Thomas Frank, also defended his player by echoing Redknapp's comments that there was no intent.

'I think the way you are to look at it, it can be given,' Frank told Sky Sports after the match. 'But if you know Dasilva, I don't think he's ever got a yellow card before and I've never seen him go physically into a tackle.

'So it's one of those where he definitely didn't do it one purpose. I think he's slipped and I think he's caught him.'

The win for Jose Mourinho's side means they have booked their spot in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

They will face either Manchester United or Manchester City in the April showpiece and will find out their opponent on Wednesday night.
