The Sandman's Gwendoline Christie on show's big Lucifer change

The Sandman star Gwendoline Christie has opened up about the major Lucifer change in the show.

In the Netflix series, it is Christie's Lucifer who gets to take part in the Imagination battle with Dream. Digital Spy caught up with the Game of Thrones star at San Diego Comic-Con to talk about it.

"Very, very, very exciting," she said of the script change, "And can I just say…they've done a phenomenal job with it."

She also talked about getting to act with Tom Sturridge, who plays Dream on the show.

"They've done a phenomenal job of making that come to life and I loved playing the relationship with Tom, I really did [enjoy] the relationship between the two of them.

"There was also a lighting stake that Jamie Charles, the director, used, which felt – it seemed to put us into a hallucinogenic state, which was exciting," she added.

The actress also recently opened up about wanting to make sure she didn't imitate Tom Ellis' version of the character. Ellis has played the character for years on his show Lucifer. But Christie says she avoided watching the show for her role.

"I have great respect for Tom, but I didn't think it would be helpful for me to watch someone else's performance of a Lucifer role," she told Digital Spy.

"I played Lucifer, actually, at Manchester Royal Exchange on stage, maybe like 2009-ish, I can't quite remember.

"In Doctor Faustus – and I was actually propelled out of the ceiling in chainmail coloured grey with my hands on fire, so it was a role I really wanted to revisit."

"I'm very lucky in that I had an amazing training at Drama Centre London, which was classical training with a method approach. We were always told to look at a wide range of material. It can be the strangest thing that comes to you and says that is Lucifer, that essence, that look, the feeling of the sun here on my face, that scorching feeling. That's Lucifer," she added.

The Sandman is now streaming on Netflix
