Olympic Memories: Daley and Lee secure victory in 10m synchronized diving gold in Tokyo

Tom Daley expressed his excitement for his upcoming performance during the Olympic Games opening ceremony, stating that he is thrilled to be partnering with someone he feels is the perfect match. He is looking forward to showcasing his skills during the event as they cruise down the River Seine in prime time.

Daley and rower Helen Glover will represent Great Britain as the Games begin against the backdrop of Paris' iconic landmarks.

Daley, who has won one gold and three bronze medals in five Olympics, and Glover, who has won gold twice in three Olympic Games, were widely selected to lead Team GB.

The 30-year-old Daley received the prestigious title as the first diver, while Glover became the first female rower to achieve this honor, following in the footsteps of Olympic legends Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent.

"I promise not to tell anyone, I was informed a couple of days ago. The initial person I informed was my spouse Lance, as I desired to share the news with him," shared Daley. He will be part of the commentary team for Discovery+ after participating in the 10m synchro competition next Monday.

Talking more about why he chose to participate in Paris 2024, Daley added: "It was challenging; after moving to America, I realized I wanted to resume training. The constant travel has made it difficult."

I am proud of the journey I have been on. Despite the challenges, I am excited to be embarking on another Olympic adventure. I took a risk and gave it my all, and the support I received made me happy.

"My little boy Phoenix may not recall, but my eldest son Robbie, who recently celebrated his sixth birthday, will definitely remember. He is thrilled about the upcoming Olympics, as he has been studying about it in school. It will be a memorable experience to show him photos and tell him that he was there."

I can't wait to experience that moment with Helen as well, she truly motivates me.

During different times in this Olympic cycle, both Daley and Glover had doubts about whether or not they would be in Paris.

Glover decided to end her rowing career after the Rio Games, but she had a change of heart when the pandemic hit. She made a comeback to the sport and achieved the historic feat of becoming the first mother to row for Team GB.

"I phoned my husband Steve [Backshall] and I believe he was in tears," Glover shared. "I also called my mum, who definitely shed some tears. I haven't had a chance to speak to my dad yet."

I can't believe it's happening, because I took a break from the sport for four years. I had officially retired after Rio, but now I'm back for Tokyo.

If I didn't have the drive to return and show others that I can succeed, especially with children by my side, I would be at home watching TV.

Can you imagine if during the Covid lockdown, with my two new babies and a young child, someone told me that because of all this, I would be chosen to lead the team as a flagbearer? It's just unbelievable to think about.
