Thunderstorm warning: Yellow alert issued by Met Office

Thunderstorm warning

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather alert for thunderstorms in the southern region of England.

The alert, covering West Sussex and Surrey, starts at noon on Friday and ends at 8 PM. It will be followed by a new warning that runs from 1 AM to 11:59 PM on Saturday.

Although the Met Office reports that a lot of areas will stay dry, thunderstorms and intense rain could lead to some interruptions in certain locations.

The alert also applies to Hampshire, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, and the West Midlands.

According to the weather forecast, areas experiencing thunderstorms can expect a lot of lightning, strong winds, and possibly even large hail. There may also be short periods of heavy rainfall.

It has cautioned that there could be 15-25 mm of rain within an hour, and there's a slight possibility of 30-40 mm occurring over a three-hour period.

Weather conditions like mist, standing water, or hail can impact driving, resulting in extended travel times for cars and buses. Train services may also experience delays.

Residents in flood-prone regions are being urged to put together an emergency flood kit.

The Met Office advises individuals to avoid taking cover under or near trees and structures that could be hit by lightning.
