The Script star says drinks with Tom Jones left him in hospital

The Script

Danny O'Donoghue, who is a singer, has shared how he ended up in the hospital after drinking champagne with Sir Tom Jones for six hours.

Sir Tom and Danny, who is the lead singer of the Irish band The Script, were judges on the first season of The Voice TV singing competition in 2012. They were accompanied by Jessie J and Will.i.am.

According to O'Donoghue, even though there is a 40-year age gap between himself and Sir Tom, he found it challenging to match the pace of the celebrated Welsh star who is almost 84 years old.

He eventually arrived home and went to sleep, but when he woke up, he realized his heart had started beating irregularly.

In an interview with BBC Radio Wales, O'Donoghue revealed that the alcohol-fueled gathering continued throughout the entire night.

He recollected that on a particular occasion after a performance on The Voice, while they were residing in the Lowry hotel located in Manchester, they decided to enjoy some alcoholic beverages. During that time, his companion shared fascinating tales concerning the life of Elvis and the Rat Pack. He noticed that every time the champagne level dipped to a specific point, his buddy would snap his fingers to request another bottle.

"He insisted that we finish the champagne before leaving the table, and the flow of the beverage seemed never-ending."

We likely spent around six hours from midnight to 6am.

I recall hearing some clinking sounds and wondered what it was. Later, I found out that the staff was setting up breakfast for the following day.

When he finally went to sleep and later woke up, he sensed that something wasn't right.

I was completely unaware of the situation, therefore I had to rush to the hospital. As a result of consuming nothing but champagne for six hours, I developed atrial fibrillation.

He mentioned that he had not appeared in one or two days of recording for The Voice.

I am to blame since I ought to have put an end to my drinking much earlier.

A worldwide research, publicly printed in the Lancet in 2018, verified earlier studies indicating that there isn't a secure degree of alcohol intake.

Danny stated that Sir Tom, hailing from Pontypridd in South Wales, is a remarkably admirable individual.

I don't mean to imply he's old, but he's roughly the same age as my father. He's a tough guy who hails from coal mining country and has a deep appreciation for music and a fondness for alcohol.

"How impressive is the journey he has been through in his profession!"

"And similar to all individuals from Wales, they possess a humble nature that can make one overlook the immense and renowned stature of Tom. Nonetheless, Tom himself radiates the same unassuming vibe. My moments spent with him were truly cherished."

The Script has just dropped their latest single Both Ways from the upcoming album Satellites, which will be released in August. This new album follows a string of successful releases from the band that includes 12 million album sales and six UK number 1 albums, along with an impressive 10 billion streams under their belt.

After a short illness, Mark Sheehan, the co-founder and guitarist of the band, passed away in April of last year.

According to O'Donoghue, creating music was a therapeutic process following "a terrible year where we experienced the loss of Mark".

As we enter a fresh year, we're emerging from a gloomy period and shedding the sorrow of the past. Instead, we're striving to approach the upcoming year with positivity and optimism.

The sadness and mourning will persist, but we aim to initiate the festivities and resume our tasks to pay tribute to our longstanding endeavors.

The singer, aged 43, confessed that he found it difficult to manage after his colleague passed away.

I was stuck in that dark place for the entire previous year and I required assistance to come out of it. Fortunately, my companions, relatives, and music offerings were there to lend me a hand and remove me from that deep hole.

The musical group now desires to commemorate his existence and O'Donoghue mentioned that even though he is not physically present with them anymore, he still greatly impacts their artistic creations.

He enforced the standards rigorously and frequently.

The person spoken of in this blog post was highly talented as a songwriter and musician. The writer of the post often considers what their opinion would be of their own work, and frequently feels that it falls short of their expectations.

He held us to very lofty expectations. He desired us to be more than just a group; he wanted us to be a group that commanded respect from others. Not only did he expect top-notch lyrics, but he also required excellent music and flawless singing.

Therefore, the entire situation remains consistent and unchanged, with the established norms and guidelines remaining in place.

I frequently strum his guitar, and it always brings me a sense of intimacy with him. It's clear that he's had a significant role in the creation of the album.

Tune in to Lucy Owen's interview with Danny O'Donoghue on BBC Radio Wales during Bank Holiday Monday from 2 PM to 5 PM BST. You can also catch it later on BBC Sounds.
