The Last of Us Episode 2

Spoilers for The Last of Us episode 2 below.

Hello darkness my old friend: viewers of The Last Of Us have a new sci-fi kiss to haunt their nightmares.

Towards the end of the highly dramatic second episode of the video game adaptation, fans watched in horror as Tess (Anna Torv) revealed to Joel and Ellie she’d been infected by the fungi-fuelled zombies, and was now going to sacrifice herself to allow the pair to escape unharmed.

As the mutants began to descend upon their location, Tess's plan was to cover herself and the Capitol building in petrol and spark her Zippo light. But before she had the chance to do so, a hideous beast approached her; then, we witnessed the most monstrous sci-fi 'kiss' since the Alien franchise.

As the creature leaned in towards her, it opened its mouth to reveal little tendrils of fungi which launched into Tess’s mouth. No wonder she wanted to burn everything to the ground. Sweet relief came as the flame finally took, blowing up the building and offing a load of spore-laden monsters, including her would-be assailant.

It’s not an image that’s going to be forgotten quickly, and fans took to social media to share their disgust. On Twitter, one person wrote: “EWWWWWWWW That was the worst “kiss scene” in the history of Cinema”; another added: “I now have to go through a year long treatment of bleaching my eyes” while someone else said: “Watching Tess get kissed by the infected is one of the most disturbing things I’ve seen.”

It was enough to make some people swear off romance for good. “The Last Of Us making me never want to kiss another human ever again”, one person commented, while another noted some irony in the scene. “The way Joel didn’t even get to kiss Tess meanwhile the infected did I WANT TO SCREAMMM THIS IS EVIL.”

Maybe the professor of mycology at the beginning of the episode was right: bomb everything.
