As a significant portion of 2023 was dedicated to updates regarding generative AI, what could be the possible impact on chatbots that will be a reflection of this eventful year?
Aside from our regular reviews of 2023 and previews of 2024, Digiday requested some input from a few chatbots. However, instead of diving into serious or intense topics, we decided to take a more humorous approach by asking three of the most well-known bots (OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, and Anthropic’s Claude) to answer some questions about the previous year, with some holiday-themed questions thrown in for good measure.
The panelists, who rely on three distinct large language models, showcase their individual styles and substance. Still, they also provided numerous responses that were predictable, universal and cautious. These answers resembled the ones frequently given by executives when they are queried about different aspects of AI during the year 2023.
Here's a shorter section of a bigger collection of questions regarding the previous year, the possible advantages and disadvantages of AI-powered marketing, and what to expect in the coming year. (To prevent chatbots from rambling on, some questions included prompts to answer in less than 100 words.)
"Pitching AI Product For 2023 Holidays: A Mad Men Challenge"
The ChatGPT holiday commercial, entitled "Imagine Tomorrow, Today," is a heartwarming depiction of a festive Brooklyn household that merges sentimental value with present-day advancement. The ad centers on a reporter, evocative of the 1960s but situated in the current era, who is given an artificial intelligent (AI) Assistant as a present. This device revolutionizes their imaginative process, supplying administrative assistance and evoking motivation, all while resonating with their individual interests in music, literature, and beverages. The commercial spotlights the AI’s effect on the journalist’s professional and family life, culminating in a cheery holiday scene that showcases the AI Assistant as the ideal holiday present for bringing tomorrow's creativity and organization into today's households.

Pitch It Like Don Draper: Imagine Yourself As Him!
ChatGPT has launched a holiday promotion called "The Timeless Gift". The campaign takes place in a 1960s-themed apartment in New York City, blending classic elegance and modern innovation. The presence of a suave protagonist, reminiscent of Don Draper, enlivens the scene as he integrates an AI Assistant into his daily life of refined tastes. It emphasizes that the AI Assistant seamlessly fits into the user's lifestyle without overpowering it, merging the past and present. The narrative portrays the AI Assistant as a doorway to creating timeless moments, rather than merely a technological device. This holds appeal for individuals who enjoy the balance of tradition and futurism, sophistication, and the art of living well.
Bard is suggesting that we should face the reality of the holidays instead of pretending everything is perfect. The season can bring a lot of stress with relatives, office parties, and the feeling of time passing quickly. Instead of trying to force yourself to feel happy, Bard recommends a new AI confidant called "Memento". Unlike typical holiday helpers, Memento won't assist with baking cookies or decorating. Instead, Memento listens and understands the cynical thoughts that you might have during this time of year. Bard suggests that we should embrace our true emotions and skip the feel-good movies. Memento is like a hangover from the holidays, but in AI form.
Meet Pater, the AI assistant that can make your holiday season even more special than you ever thought possible. With Pater's amazing capabilities, you and your family can finally enjoy more quality time together, without ever having to worry about the hassle of household tasks like repairs, finances, and scheduling. Thanks to Pater's cutting-edge AI, you can focus on the things that really matter – like spending lazy Sundays with your loved ones, having cozy chats by the fire, or even catching snowflakes together. So why not bring home your very own Pater robot this Christmas, and discover for yourself the convenience, ease, and joy that comes from having an always-helpful assistant always at your disposal? With Pater, you'll never have to worry about life's little details again – which means your mind can stay where it matters the most: enjoying the company of those who mean the most to you.

There were also ethical worries that led to discussions about regulation, and the rise of AI-powered jobs caused stress for many workers. All these happenings confirmed that AI is becoming increasingly important in marketing. 2023 was definitely a year for the books!
In 2023, Anthropic made a notable announcement by unveiling Claude, which is the initial conversational AI assistant with an emphasis on being constructive, non-threatening, and truthful. Claude is distinct from other chatbots, such as ChatGPT, which have drawn both excitement and apprehension because of certain problems. Concerned About Copyright Infringement?
As an AI designed by OpenAI, I do not have personal worries or emotions. However, it's essential to understand the importance of copyright problems in AI programs, specifically in the area of marketing. AI applications can create content that may unintentionally appear to be already copyrighted, causing legal and ethical complications. To avoid infringing on intellectual property rights, users must ensure that AI-generated content is genuine. This necessitates a thorough examination of the input given to AI programs as well as how their results are used. Staying aware of changing copyright laws and regulations is crucial for ensuring ethical and lawful compliance in content-driven industries such as marketing.
The Bard acknowledges that copyright concerns are both a friend and foe, as they serve as a reminder of the delicate balance needed to avoid unintentionally mimicking copyrighted material. To assist in this effort, the Bard employs data filters to weed out copyrighted content prior to training, along with using source attribution to acknowledge where credit is due. Additionally, plagiarism detection algorithms are utilized to help identify potential infringement. However, it takes a combined team effort to achieve a successful outcome. Feedback and open communication from others is key to ensuring output is both creative and legal. By working together to navigate the copyright landscape, AI-powered marketing can be an example of responsible innovation.
The use of AI to create marketing content is still uncertain in terms of copyright. Legal frameworks have not caught up with the emerging technology that can generate materials that could infringe on copyright laws. This makes it risky for brands to use AI-generated content without caution. The best approach is to have human oversight in adaptation and compliance, rather than relying on full automation. As laws develop, keeping track of attribution and limiting the volume of generated content can help ensure responsible use. However, assuming that AI-generated content is protected without proper review is not a wise move. AI currently works best as a tool to improve productivity, allowing humans to refine the generated content rather than as a fix-all solution.
Forecasting The Development Of AI Marketing By 2024
According to ChatGPT, in 2024, marketing using AI will develop considerably. The main focus will be on an improved personalization approach by using advanced algorithms supported by AI technology. This advanced approach will help to customize content or recommendations specifically to suit an individual's interests and purchasing behaviors. As AI continues to evolve and become more robust in its abilities, we'll need to focus on ensuring transparency, avoiding bias, and implementing responsible data practices. As we work together to build this future, we have the potential to amplify human potential and push boundaries, but we must do so with care and trust. Let's embrace what's to come, but be prepared to overcome any challenges that might arise!
In 2023, there was a surge in AI-driven marketing with popular systems like ChatGPT, but there are still more aspects to be explored. In 2024, there will be a need for more strict and careful selection of generated content instead of just producing mass content. This means that companies must have more advanced methods for testing the effectiveness of their strategies, technology, and team accountability. Consumers have different attitudes towards AI, ranging from excitement to concern to indifference. To use AI smartly, companies need to segment their customer base, personalize messages and avoid making assumptions. Integrating AI into analytics, mapping customer journeys, and design systems will speed up success. However, trust is the key to staying ahead of competitors. Simply using AI without a clear purpose, creative ideas, or improved customer experiences will not help businesses stand out among their competitors in the crowded market.
