Laraine Newman, one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live and the mother of Hacks star Hannah Einbinder, has joined the conversation regarding the classification of The Bear as a comedy at the Emmys. This comes after her daughter was passed over for an award in favor of a performer from the popular restaurant series.

Einbinder, 29, received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a comedy series, but ultimately lost the award to Liza Colón-Zayas, 52, from The Bear.

The victory sparked extensive discussion about whether The Bear qualifies as a comedy. During the Emmys, host Eugene Levy, 77, humorously remarked, “I realize many of you might be waiting for us to joke about whether The Bear is genuinely a comedy — but true to the essence of The Bear, we won’t be making any jokes.”

On X/Twitter, Newman, who is 72 years old, first responded with a strong tweet that said, “Forget. About. The. Bear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

She eventually removed the message, explaining to one follower, "I decided to take it down. That wasn't my finest hour."

She updated it with a new statement that read: “I believe The Bear is an excellent series, but in my opinion, it isn't a comedy— not even a dark one.”

Previously, she shared, "Every time I consider The Bear being placed in the comedy category for the Emmys, I can almost sense an ulcer forming."

Newman was one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live, appearing on the show from its inaugural season in 1975 until 1980. She also featured in movies such as Coneheads, Stardust Memories, and The Flintstones.

This year, The Bear secured three out of four acting Emmy awards in the comedy category. Jeremy Allen White received the award for Best Actor, while Ebon Moss-Bachrach was honored as Best Supporting Actor.

"My heart is racing," White expressed as he stepped onto the stage. "I really appreciate you picking me for this. I feel incredibly fortunate and truly thankful. Thank you. To my amazing cast, I will always cherish you. Working with you has been a joy, and I want us to stay connected for life. I care for you all deeply."

On the other hand, the Emmy for Best Actress in a Comedy Series went to Jean Smart, who starred alongside Einbinder in Hacks.

Hacks also took home the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series.

The Japan-based series Shōgun achieved a remarkable feat at the Emmys, winning a total of 18 awards and setting a new record for the highest number of accolades earned in a single television season.
