DC-area residents share some funny and strange Thanksgiving memories - WTOP News

Thanksgiving

Scott Gelman from WTOP interviewed people living in Washington D.C. to find out what unusual or amusing experiences they recall from Thanksgiving celebrations.

During Thanksgiving, it's not just about consuming turkey, stuffing or feeling sleepy due to tryptophan. This occasion is also significant for hearing exceptional family tales, and having complex discussions over a meal, resulting in unforgettable memories.

WTOP assigned Scott Gelman to tour the D.C. vicinity and determine the amusing or strange experiences that make their Thanksgiving reminiscence catalog.

Although many individuals on Bethesda Row informed our fearless journalist that they could not remember any peculiar or amusing anecdotes from past Thanksgiving celebrations, a few turkey day tales stood out as particularly noteworthy. The reporter himself reminisced about a batch of burnt rolls from some years ago.

Peyton shared with WTOP that at one time their Christmas tree toppled over and resulted in the breaking of all their decorations.

Summer informed WTOP that she experienced a Thanksgiving meal with her friend's grandparents that fully satisfied the cultural customs.

As an English person, Thanksgiving isn't typically celebrated in my culture. However, during my experience with American Thanksgiving, all of the expected stereotypes were present. This included disagreements and arguments between family members, passive-aggressive comments veiled with politeness, and general drama. Summer observed this firsthand.

Matthew had a funny holiday experience to share about his daughter's significant other that reminded him of the ending of the film College Road Trip, in which Raven Symone and Martin Lawrence starred.

Matthew shared with WTOP that his boyfriend sat on a chair that he believed he had already repaired during their dinner. However, the chair ended up collapsing in the middle of their meal. Although Matthew's boyfriend was slightly anxious and laughed nervously, the rest of their group found the situation hilarious.

According to Taylor's statement to WTOP, their family's Thanksgiving seemed to have a slightly burnt quality to it.

Taylor shared that one time, she completely ruined a turkey and it ended up being inedible. Despite this, everyone still had a good time and laughed about it because being together was more important than the food. This is ultimately what Thanksgiving is all about - coming together with loved ones and creating memories.

According to Kara, the most memorable part of her Thanksgiving was "pretty much anything my grandmother said."

She mentioned that she believes it happened last year when the individual got expelled from their Mahjong or Rummikub group due to accusations of cheating.

And, of course, we can't overlook the adorable pets that add to the memorable Thanksgiving anecdotes. Someone shared that a sizable Puggle named Bentley had definitely savored a big win on Turkey Day.

According to the individual speaking to WTOP, their parents owned a dog that was quite overweight. One day, the dog was walking around the kitchen and happened to come across a turkey tray that had an excessive amount of gravy in it. As a result, the gravy started to accumulate and eventually spilled over like a dam breaking, causing the dog to be drenched in gravy. It was a moment of pure happiness for the dog and could be considered one of the best days of its life.

While it may not be as amazing as Bentley's incredible gravy, you and your loved ones still have the opportunity to create lasting memories this Thanksgiving. Even if things don't go perfectly, focus on the positive experiences and cherish the time spent together.

This report was aided by the contributions of Scott Gelman from WTOP.
