Letsile Tebogo stuns Noah Lyles to win men’s 200m gold
When Letsile Tebogo reached the end of the race and won the gold medal for the 200m sprint at the Paris 2024 Olympics, he proudly tapped his chest.
The talented athlete from Botswana achieved a win in a new African record time of 19.46 seconds, thrilling the excited crowd at Stade de France on Thursday (8 August). This victory also prevented Noah Lyles, who was expected to win, from achieving the sprint double.
Lyles, who took home the gold in the Olympic 100m race in an exciting way on Sunday, couldn't keep up with the amazing speed of the 21-year-old runner. He ended up coming in third place behind another American runner, Kenneth Bednarek, who finished in 19.62 seconds compared to Lyles' 19.70 seconds, winning the bronze. Now, Lyles will have to count on the relay races to achieve his dream of winning more than one gold medal at this year's Games.
Tebogo proudly dedicated his amazing victory to his late mother Seratiwa, who passed away in May last year. He proudly lifted his spikes, showing the cameras her birthday, and had her initials painted on his nails.
Tebogo, who won the bronze medal in the 200m at last year's world championships, said with emotion, "She is watching from above, and she is very, very pleased."
