Actor Tamayo Perry from the movie Pirates of the Caribbean has passed away after being bitten by a shark while surfing in Hawaii.

The press conference by emergency services in Honolulu confirmed the death of the 49-year-old on Sunday afternoon.

The authorities were contacted and arrived at Malaekahana Beach at 1:00 PM.

However, Perry, who also worked as a lifeguard, was declared deceased by paramedics after being rescued and brought to the shore on a jet ski.

Perry had a role in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which is the fourth movie in the series.

The movie from 2011 features Johnny Depp in the role of quirky pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, alongside Penelope Cruz and Geoffrey Rush.

Perry also acted in Lost, Hawaii Five-0, Blue Crush, and Charlie's Angels 2, and was featured in a commercial for Coca-Cola.

Perry grew up on the east side of Oahu and has been a professional surfer for more than ten years.

In a short description of his time at Oahu Surfing Experience, where he worked as a teacher, he talked about his adventures surfing "the most dangerous wave in the world".

"This young islander can compete with the top players in the world," he stated.

He also mentioned that many years ago, he was part of "an unusual incident that almost resulted in his death".

Perry didn't go into detail about what happened in the incident, but mentioned that it occurred due to another person's "lack of awareness".

Honolulu Ocean Safety chief Kurt Lager described Perry as a lifeguard who was admired by everyone. Lager noted that Perry was renowned on the north shore of Oahu and beyond.

Tamayo had a captivating personality that drew people in, and despite being adored by many, he had an even greater love for others.

He said, "We send our sympathy to Tamayo's family."

Mayor Rick Blangiardi agreed with Lager's feelings, describing Perry's death as a "sad event".

Speaking to the media, he mentioned that Tamayo was a well-known figure in the water sports community and held in high regard. He emphasized that Tamayo was a local resident and a valuable member of the team responsible for ocean safety.

He mentioned that receiving a phone call like that on a Sunday afternoon was "difficult to believe", and encouraged Perry's family to be respected and allowed to mourn in private.
