Sweetpea on Sky: The ending of the series explained

Sweetpea

The spooky season is officially here, and we're currently captivated by a chilling show called Sweetpea on Sky. Featuring Ella Purnell, this six-part series is adapted from the novel by CJ Skuse. It revolves around Rhiannon (played by Purnell), who, feeling overlooked throughout her life and grappling with her father's death, channels her anger in a drastic way—through murder. As the series progresses, she goes on to kill several men and kidnaps a woman, but does she ever get caught? Here's a look at how Sweetpea wraps up.

Will Rhiannon Be Caught For The Murders?

In the six episodes of Sweetpea, Rhiannon ends up taking the lives of three men: Ryan, Mike, and Julia's fiancé, Marcus. After Rhiannon pushes Marcus off the edge at the end of the fifth episode, both she and Julia are taken into police custody.

They present their version of events, claiming that Marcus kidnapped Julia and had plans to harm her. However, Rhiannon intervened just in time to rescue her, causing Marcus to lose his balance and tumble from the upper floor.

The police were convinced by the evidence, including Marcus's DNA found on the knife and his aggressive text messages to Rhiannon. However, Marina, the less experienced detective, has a strong feeling that Rhiannon is the actual perpetrator of the murders. During the interrogation, she presses Rhiannon hard, which leads to a stern reprimand from her superior.

Rhiannon and Julia are now free, but Rhiannon's troubles aren't finished. One night while Rhiannon is out, Marina sneaks into her house and finds the security camera footage from Rhiannon's father's business. The footage reveals Rhiannon cutting Julia's tires just before Julia disappears.

Marina waits at Rhiannon's house, preparing for a face-off. When Rhiannon gets there the following morning, they have a tense exchange. Rhiannon reminds Marina that she can't use the CCTV footage as evidence because she illegally entered her home to obtain it. Although Marina is aware of this, she insists she can afford to wait since she believes Rhiannon will commit another murder. To be fair, she might be onto something.

Where Did Julia Venture Off To?

Once Julia manages to leave the police station as a free woman, she goes to Rhiannon's house, since she isn't sure where else to turn.

The two friends head out for an evening, and it's during this time that their relationship begins to shift. Julia requests Rhiannon's bank card, which she foolishly gives her. Later on, Rhiannon suggests that Julia should come live with her, a proposal that makes her understandably uneasy.

Following their evening out, they visit Rhiannon’s newspaper office, where Julia begins to share her story about being abducted. This experience only strengthens her resolve to distance herself from Rhiannon.

Julia was supposed to come over for dinner that evening, but as expected, she never shows up. The following morning, Rhiannon gets a notification about a transaction from British Airways on her bank account.

Although Rhiannon may not fully grasp the situation, it's quite obvious to the audience that Julia wasn't keen on being controlled by anyone. She took advantage of her kidnapper's finances to escape their small town.

Who Was AJ's Police Informant?

After breaking up with Craig and returning home to prepare dinner for herself and Julia, Rhiannon is taken aback when AJ unexpectedly arrives at her doorstep.

They end up passing the night together, and the following morning, AJ shares that he now has a contact within the police department who is providing him with information about the case. He mentions that the contact is a "he," and then shows Rhiannon a photo of her father's knife.

At the moment, it's uncertain who sent AJ the image. Is it possible that Marina is posing as someone different? Or could it be a mere coincidence that a member of the police shared the knife picture with him? If the series gets a second season, we would like to see this mystery resolved.

What’s The Ending Of Sweetpea On Sky?

When AJ shows Rhiannon the image of the knife, she remarks, "that's quite a remarkable piece of equipment." This mirrors AJ's earlier comment when he first encounters Rhiannon at the office, where he refers to the knife she uses to open mail as "an impressive bit of kit."

The words spark a moment of clarity for both of them, leading AJ to the shocking realization that he has just slept with a serial killer.

Rhiannon desperately tries to soothe AJ and mislead him, but he’s onto something and decides to look for her dad's knife. Of course, he has no luck finding it since it’s placed securely in a police station.

He labels Rhiannon as a "monster" and attempts to walk away, but she grabs a cooking knife from the countertop and prevents him from leaving. In a frenzied act, she stabs him several times and then embraces his lifeless form on the kitchen floor.

At this moment, her older sister Seren appears, and the scene concludes with Rhiannon casting a look of fear towards the door.
