Police find axe in car of drink-drive suspect

A suspected drink-driver was found to have an axe in his car after police pulled him over.

Officers were called after 5.30pm on Saturday amid reports of an intoxicated man driving away from the Tesco store in New Milton.

The vehicle and driver were found on Keyhaven Road, Milford, a short while later.

While officers were dealing with the suspect, he became obstructive and assaulted an officer, a spokesperson for Hampshire police said.

An axe was also found in the car door pocket.

A 34-year-old man of no fixed abode was arrested on suspicion of failing to provide a specimen of breath, assaulting a police officer and possession of an offensive weapon.

He has been released from custody but remains under investigation.
