The initial trailer for the eagerly awaited new Superman movie directed by James Gunn has been released, and comic book fans are thrilled to see a cherished character featured in the teaser.
The upcoming film simply titled Superman will feature David Corenswet in the role of the iconic superhero. This project is part of DC Studios' efforts to revitalize its film lineup under the direction of James Gunn.
The initial teaser was released on Thursday, December 19, showcasing Corenswet in his debut appearance as Krypton's Last Son.
While the trailer doesn't reveal much about the plot, it does introduce almost all of the main characters, such as Lois Lane (played by Rachel Brosnahan), Lex Luthor (portrayed by Nicholas Hoult), Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi).
One character that has everyone buzzing is Krypto the Superdog, Superman's loyal companion, who possesses many of the same abilities as his owner. In the trailer, we see Krypto coming to Superman's aid as he lies injured in the snow, likely close to Superman's home in the Arctic, famously known as the Fortress of Solitude.
In his post regarding the trailer, Gunn mentioned, “Here it is: the Superman trailer. Krypto, let’s head home.”
Before long, Krypto's name started to trend, as numerous fans shared their excitement about spotting the beloved four-legged companion in the teaser trailer.
Kevin Smith, the director of Clerks and Mallrats, expressed his praise by saying, “Well done, Krypto! Excellent job, @JamesGunn!”
DC Comics author Tom King enthusiastically responded with, “Absolutely!”
One excited supporter commented: "Is Krypto in this? I'm grinning from ear to ear right now!"
Another person commented, “Honestly, I can’t understand why anyone would question James Gunn. The #Superman trailer perfectly captures the fresh and exciting direction that DC really needs. David Corenswet radiates that classic Superman vibe. Plus, you can bet Gunn will have us all smitten with Krypto. It’s fantastic!”

In the meantime, a fourth person playfully remarked, “Honestly, the highlight of that trailer was Krypto. THAT’S MY BOYYYYYYYYYY!”
Earlier this year, Gunn revealed that Krypto would be part of the film. He also shared a first look at the character on X/Twitter, showing Krypto sitting on the moon alongside Superman as they look down at Earth. This scene pays tribute to a famous panel from the well-known comic book All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison.
Gunn elaborated on the choice to feature Krypto in the movie, stating: “Krypto will appear in Superman this summer. The character was influenced by our dog Ozu, whom we brought home shortly after I began working on the screenplay for Superman.”
"Ozu, who had been living in a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs and had no experience with humans, was definitely a challenge," the 58-year-old remarked.
Gunn went on to explain: “He burst into our lives and wreaked havoc, tearing apart our home, ruining our shoes and furniture, and even chewing on my laptop. It took a considerable amount of time before he allowed us to approach him. I thought to myself, ‘Wow, life would be so much tougher if Ozu had special powers?’ - which led me to introduce Krypto into the story, transforming the narrative just as Ozu was transforming my life.”
In conclusion, the director of The Suicide Squad shared: “There's no better occasion to introduce the not-so-perfect good boy Krypto than during #AdoptAShelterDog month. By the way, Ozu is usually quite the good boy these days.”
Superman is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
