The first teaser for the eagerly awaited new Superman movie directed by James Gunn has been released, and fans of the superhero are thrilled to see a cherished character featured in the sneak peek.
The upcoming film, simply titled Superman, will feature David Corenswet stepping into the role of the iconic superhero. This project marks DC Studios' effort to refresh its cinematic direction under the leadership of Gunn.
The initial clip was released on Thursday, December 19, showcasing Corenswet in his debut appearance as the Last Son of Krypton.
While the trailer doesn't reveal much about the plot, it does introduce almost all the main characters, including Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi).
One character that's been getting a lot of attention lately is Krypto the Superdog, Superman's faithful canine companion, who possesses many of the same superpowers as his master. In the trailer, we see Krypto coming to Superman's aid as he lies injured in the snow, likely close to the Arctic location known as the Fortress of Solitude.
In his blog about the trailer, Gunn expressed: “Here it is: the Superman trailer. Krypto, let’s head back.”
Before long, Krypto's name was all over social media, as numerous fans shared their excitement about spotting the lovable canine in the teaser trailer.
Kevin Smith, the director of Clerks and Mallrats, expressed: "Well done, Krypto! Excellent job, @JamesGunn!"
DC Comics writer Tom King enthusiastically responded with, "Absolutely!"
A thrilled fan exclaimed, "They included Krypto in this? I can't stop grinning!"
Someone else commented: "I honestly can't understand why some people doubt James Gunn. The #Superman trailer really captures the fresh start that DC needs. David Corenswet brings a strong Superman presence. Plus, I have a feeling Gunn will make us all adore Krypto. Fantastic!"

In the meantime, a fourth individual made a light-hearted comment: “To be honest, the highlight of that trailer was Krypto. THAT’S MY BOYYYYYYYYYY!”
Earlier this year, Gunn revealed that Krypto would be part of the movie. He posted the first image of the character on X/Twitter, showing the dog on the Moon alongside Superman as they look down at Earth. This scene pays tribute to a panel from the famous comic book All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison.
Elaborating on the choice to feature Krypto in the movie, Gunn stated: “Krypto will be making his debut in Superman this summer. The character is based on our dog Ozu, whom we brought home shortly after I began working on the screenplay for Superman.”
“The 58-year-old explained that Ozu, having lived in a backyard with 60 other dogs and never having encountered people before, posed quite a challenge.”
Gunn went on to explain, “He came in and completely trashed our home, tore apart our shoes and furniture — he even chewed up my laptop. It took quite a while before he allowed us to get close to him. I found myself wondering, 'Wow, how complicated would things be if Ozu had superpowers?' That's when Krypto was added to the script, and he transformed the narrative just like Ozu was transforming my life.”
In conclusion, the director of The Suicide Squad remarked, “There’s no better time to introduce the less-than-perfect Krypto than during #AdoptAShelterDog month. By the way, Ozu happens to be a really good boy quite often today.”
Superman is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
