Super Bowl 2023

The Super Bowl returns on Sunday as the Philadelphia Eagles face the Kansas City Chiefs in the biggest match of the NFL season.

The huge event is a truly global affair, with last year's match being watched by an estimated 208 million people around the world and there are huge amounts of money surrounding it, from extortionate ticket prices to staggering amounts of advertising revenue.

But, aside from the Bruce Lombardi trophy and all the bragging rights that go with it, what's actually in it for the Super Bowl winners? And, for that matter, the losers?

Here's everything you need to know about the Super Bowl prize money:

How much money do the winners get paid?

It's not just the NFL Championship at stake for the the Chiefs and Eagles' players, as each member of the Super Bowl winning team stands to pocket a whopping $157,000, or around £130,000, as a cash bonus. This is a $7,000 increase on last year's prize and is per the NFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement.

What about the losers?

As you'd expect, there isn't as big a bonus for those on the losing side, but it's not exactly peanuts. Players on the losing team will still receive $82,000, or around £68,000.

How much does the game itself make?

There are absolutely enormous amounts of money surrounding the big game. With a global audience of millions, it generates an astonishing amount of advertising revenue, around $500 million of it last year. As a result, an average 30-second advertising spot during the broadcast of the game cost a staggering $6.5 million during last year's event.

Americans spend huge amounts of money ahead of the game too, with consumer spending estimated to be around $16.5 billion for this year's event, with fans across the country stocking up on food, drink, team merchandise and decorations.

How much are tickets?

Unsurprisingly, the biggest game of the NFL season comes with a hefty price tag. Those wanting to watch the game in person at the State Farm Stadium will have to fork out thousands of dollars, although the cost varies greatly over time.

With just a few days to go until the Super Bowl, tickets were still available for between $3,000 and $4,000, although some tickets were priced as high as $25,000.

But that's nothing compared to the cost of luxury suites at the stadium. Coming with 18 tickets, two VIP parking passes and a food and alcohol package, they are priced at between $1.5m and $2m.
