On This Day | Gordon own-goal helps Hammers sink Sunderland | West Ham United F.C.

Sunderland

Reflecting on a memorable moment from West Ham United's history on this day, brought to you by Heineken…

On this day in 2007, West Ham United had a fortunate win against Roy Keane's Sunderland, finishing the match 3-1 in the Premier League.

After narrowly dodging relegation in an exciting manner the season before, the Irons began the 2007/08 season strong, winning three out of their first five matches. However, heading into this game, they were on a downward spiral with three consecutive losses.

It was beneficial for them when Sunderland's goalkeeper Craig Gordon unintentionally assisted them in getting back on track with their victories.

The Hammers took the lead when left-back George McCartney created some space to deliver a cross, allowing Carlton Cole to slip between the center-backs. He jumped up and headed the ball into the net from six yards out, beating Craig Gordon. Despite this setback, the visitors dominated the rest of the first half but were unable to equalize.

As the second half began, Sunderland's efforts were rewarded just seven minutes in when Kenwyne Jones leapt above Matthew Upson and sent a powerful header into the bottom left corner of the goal. Shortly after, Jones directed another header toward Grant Leadbitter, whose fierce strike was expertly parried onto the post by a diving Robert Green.

West Ham managed to take the lead in a stroke of luck just 12 minutes before the game ended. Initially, Luis Boa Morte delivered a low cross that deflected off Nyron Nosworthy's legs, landing perfectly for substitute Nolberto Solano. Solano then took a shot that struck the post, but the ball ricocheted off the goalkeeper, Gordon, and went in.

In the last minute of the game, Boa Morte teamed up with McCartney and delivered a cross that allowed Craig Bellamy to score by sending the ball past Gordon into the top corner at the near post.

The Hammers ended up losing only two of their last ten Premier League games, wrapping up the season in tenth position with a total of 49 points.
