Mayenda at double as Sunderland rout Sheffield Wednesday to stay perfect

Régis Le Bris had a great start as the new manager of Sunderland when they beat Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 in their first home game at the Stadium of Light. Sheffield Wednesday had easily beaten Sunderland last season to secure their safety, but this time they were surprised by Danny Rohl's team, who had also started the season with a 4-0 win against Plymouth.

Dennis Cirkin scored the opening goal for Sunderland, followed by teenager Eliezer Mayenda scoring his first goal for the club to put them two goals ahead. Luke O'Nien extended their lead with a third goal in the first half, and Mayenda scored his second goal and Sunderland's fourth right after the second half began.

Le Bris took over in June after a disappointing season for Sunderland. They ended up in 16th place in the Championship after failing to win any of their last seven home games. However, their impressive win on Sunday means they have now won their first two games of the season, along with Burnley and Watford. On the other hand, Wednesday's five-game winning streak came to an end.

Sunderland took the lead in the game after 11 minutes when Cirkin scored a goal from Patrick Roberts' free-kick. Shortly after, Mayenda capitalized on a mistake from Josh Windass and scored from the edge of the box.

On Wednesday, the team struggled and quickly fell behind 3-0 in just 24 minutes. Beadle was unable to stop Chris Rigg's long shot, leading to O'Nien scoring from up close. Although Ingelsson thought he scored a goal to lessen the gap, it was disallowed due to Gassama being offside.

The guests were lucky to avoid letting in another goal towards the end of the first half. Roberts made a great shot from the right, but it just missed the goal. Beadle then made an incredible save to stop Rigg's powerful shot from going into the net.

Rohl decided to make a change during halftime to try and improve the team's performance. Michael Smith came on for Gassama, but Sunderland quickly scored their fourth goal just two minutes into the second half. Jack Clarke, who had been causing trouble for Wednesday's defense all game, once again made a dangerous run down the left side and crossed the ball for Mayenda to score his second goal of the match.
