Storm Bert to hit UK at weekend with weather warnings issued
This weekend, Storm Bert is set to bring a variety of weather challenges to the United Kingdom.
The second storm of the season is expected to bring powerful winds, heavy rainfall, and, at times, snow and severe snowstorms.
The Met Office has issued an amber warning for snow and ice, as well as several yellow warnings for rain and wind, for the upcoming Saturday and Sunday.
Temperatures will increase significantly as warmer air moves in.
On Saturday, Storm Bert will arrive from the Atlantic after experiencing rapid intensification.
This occurs when the storm's central pressure decreases by more than 24 millibars within a 24-hour period. Meteorologists often refer to this phenomenon as a "weather bomb."
Winds will pick up across the UK throughout Saturday morning, with gusts reaching 40-60 mph (65-96 km/h) expected in many areas of Scotland and northern England.
The Met Office has announced a yellow wind warning for these regions, which will be in effect from 5 AM to 7 PM on Saturday.
In the areas near the coasts of the Irish Sea, winds will hit speeds of 70 mph (113 km/h).
Southern England is expected to experience strong winds later on Saturday and into Sunday.
The Met Office has issued a separate yellow warning for strong winds, highlighting that from 3 PM on Saturday until 9 PM on Sunday, gusts could reach as high as 70 mph (113 km/h) in exposed coastal areas along the south coast.
These strong winds could lead to damage and interruptions in transportation systems and structures, and there is also a chance of power outages.
There is also a chance of heavy rainfall intermittently throughout the weekend, and the Environment Agency warns that this could result in some areas experiencing localized flooding.
In the south-western and central regions of England and Wales, the Met Office has issued a yellow alert for rain. It indicates that on Saturday, widespread rainfall amounts could reach between 50 and 75 millimeters (2 to 3 inches).
In certain regions like South Wales and Dartmoor, rainfall amounts might reach around 150mm (6 inches), which is equivalent to the total average rainfall for November occurring in just one day.
Gusty winds will persist at intervals throughout Sunday and Monday as Storm Bert gradually moves eastward across the UK.
While wind and rain will create problems for many of us this weekend, there will still be winter-related dangers for others.
This week, the UK is experiencing frigid temperatures, and as Storm Bert approaches with rain on Saturday, it will collide with Arctic air, potentially leading to considerable snowfall.
Initially, light and brief snowfall is expected in Northern Ireland and Wales, but more intense and disruptive snow is forecasted for Saturday in north-west England and Scotland.
An increased amber alert for snow and ice is in effect from 7 AM to 5 PM this Saturday in certain regions of central Scotland, including parts of the Grampians and Highlands.
In elevated areas, there could be anywhere from 30 to 40 centimeters (or 12 to 16 inches) of snowfall.
The Met Office has released a yellow alert for snow and rain affecting various regions in Scotland and northern England on Saturday, predicting accumulations of 5-10 cm (2-4 inches) of snow, even at lower elevations.
Regions like the North York Moors could experience snowfall of around 15 centimeters (6 inches) accompanied by blustery conditions and significant snow accumulation.
There may be travel delays in the central part of Scotland due to significant snowfall for a while.
The elevated areas in northern England and Scotland can be quite dangerous due to the blowing snow, storms, and poor visibility caused by fog.
There may occasionally be freezing rain, which happens when rain hits frozen surfaces and instantly turns to ice, resulting in extremely slippery conditions.
As temperatures increase, any snow or sleet is expected to change to regular rain by Saturday afternoon, which could potentially result in flooding.
This week, temperatures have ranged from 1 to 7 degrees Celsius, which is significantly lower than usual for this time of year. The wind chill has made it feel even colder in many areas.
However, as Storm Bert approaches, the wind will change from chilly northern gusts to warmer south-western breezes.
As a result, on Saturday, temperatures in Wales and central to southern England are expected to reach between 12 and 15 degrees Celsius.
On Saturday, the northern regions will stay cooler with temperatures ranging from 2 to 7 degrees Celsius. However, by Sunday, warmer weather will reach every area.
