The volleyball player was given a four-year prison term in 2016 for confessing to three instances of rape against a 12-year-old British girl that occurred in August 2014.

He returned to playing volleyball after spending only a year in prison, and in June, he was chosen to be a part of the Dutch Olympic team.

Van de Velde will participate in the games despite facing criticism, as the Dutch Olympic committee believes he has demonstrated self-awareness and contemplation.
