A woman has been taken into custody in relation to the passing of the baby grandson of ex-Manchester United player Steve Bruce.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) reported that a woman in her 40s has been taken into custody and released on bail as they continue to investigate allegations of child neglect.
Authorities discovered the body of an infant at a location in Trafford Borough at approximately 7:10 AM BST on October 18.
Four-month-old Madison is the daughter of Matt Smith, a 35-year-old former striker for teams like Leeds, Fulham, and Millwall. He is married to Amy, 37, who is the daughter of the manager of Blackpool.
A representative from GMP stated, "On Friday, October 18, 2024, around 7:10 AM, officers arrived in Trafford after receiving a welfare check request, and regrettably discovered that a baby had passed away."
A woman in her 40s has been taken into custody on charges of child neglect. She has been released on bail while we continue to look into the details of this tragic death.
Bruce, the current manager of Blackpool, a League One club, was absent from the team's match against Barnsley on October 19 due to the incident.
Later that month, the 63-year-old shared a message on the club's official X account, stating, "This has been the toughest period for my family, and it's something no one should ever have to go through."
"I want to take a moment, on behalf of our entire family, to express our gratitude for all the kind messages and tributes we’ve received from both the football community and beyond. Your support has deeply moved us."
