The latest updates from BBC News in the South East region.

A big fire broke out at a construction site for an apartment building in the center of a town in Surrey. The developer stated that the fire was sparked by welding being done at the site.

Clouds of smoke were visible up to four miles away when a fire started near the Tothill multi-storey car park on Elmsleigh Road in Staines at 12:35 BST on Wednesday.

One out of every four individuals affected by breathing in smoke needed medical attention at St Peter's Hospital.

Fairview New Homes, a company that builds houses, said sorry to people who live and work nearby for any worry or trouble they may have experienced.

A spokesperson announced that a fire broke out on the rooftop of one of the buildings at the Staines construction site due to welding work being done.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service stated that the 14-story building was vacant at the moment.

One out of every four individuals who experienced smoke inhalation was transported to the hospital.

A few people living there heard a big noise, according to the builder. They think it happened because gas tanks exploded.

The website was initially approved to build 206 one and two-bedroom apartments on the old Masonic Lodge and Telephone Exchange in 2022.

Fairview New Homes purchased the property from Inland Homes after the initial developer successfully appealed Spelthorne Borough Council's decision to reject the project.

Smoke columns were visible from Heathrow Airport.

The fresh apartments were supposed to be ready for move-in starting this month, but now the timeline has been pushed back to November due to the fire incident.

The apartments are listed for sale with a starting price of £310,000.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service reported that eight fire trucks were present at the location.
