Since 1924, St. Johnstone FC had been playing at Muirton Park. However, by the early 1980s, the stadium was in poor condition, and the club, then competing in the Second Division, couldn’t afford the necessary repairs. In December 1986, the club got a proposal from the supermarket chain ASDA, which wanted to purchase Muirton Park along with an adjoining ice rink in order to construct a supermarket there. As a result, the club relocated to a new stadium on the western outskirts of the city without incurring any costs.
The new stadium officially opened on August 19, 1989, when St. Johnstone FC faced off against Clydebank and came out on top. The club experienced significant success right away, earning promotion to the First Division in their inaugural season at McDiarmid Park. During their return to the top league, the average crowd at McDiarmid was around 6,000, which was three times the number they had at the old Muirton Park. This surge in attendance led the club to expand seating by adding an additional 600 spots, increasing the total capacity to 1,000. The highest recorded attendance of 10,721 occurred during a home match against Glasgow Rangers on February 26, 1991.
