Manchester United 'express interest' in paying manager Ruben Amorim's release clause, Sporting confirm in statement - Eurosport

Manchester United has shown interest in covering the buyout clause for Ruben Amorim, the coach of Sporting CP, as confirmed by the Portuguese club.

According to a statement from the Liga Portugal team, United is prepared to activate a €10 million (£8.3m) buyout clause to bring Amorim to Old Trafford.

United is on the lookout for a new manager following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag on Monday, marking the team's worst start to a Premier League season in history.

On Tuesday, Sporting released a statement saying, "Manchester United FC has shown interest in bringing on coach Ruben Amorim. In response, the board of Sporting SAD highlighted the terms of the current employment contract with the coach, particularly focusing on the termination clause and the fee of 10 million euros."

"Manchester United FC showed interest in covering the amount stated in the previously mentioned clause to Sporting SAD."

Amorim, previously rumored to be in contention for the Liverpool position during the summer, has led Sporting to win two Liga Portugal championships since he took over in 2020, including the club's first title in 19 years.

United currently sits in 14th place in the Premier League, managing to secure only three victories out of their first nine games. In the UEFA Europa League group stage, they find themselves in 21st position out of 36 teams, having drawn all three of their matches so far.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has been named the temporary manager of United and will oversee the team's Carabao Cup match at home against Leicester City this Wednesday.

Last summer, Van Nistelrooy came back to the club to serve as Ten Hag's assistant. During his time at United from 2001 to 2006, he netted 150 goals in 219 matches.

United's upcoming match in the Premier League will take place on Sunday at Old Trafford, where they will face Chelsea.

On Monday, Amorim mentioned that he anticipated inquiries regarding the United position, but he wasn’t ready to discuss it. The 39-year-old coach's team is set to compete against Nacional in the Portuguese League Cup on Tuesday.
