Live report: Bangladesh vs South Africa, Wankhede

South Africa vs Bangladesh

Bangladesh requires 335 runs to win the game, and they have only 37 remaining overs to achieve this target.

The most recent 5 overs (RR) had a score of 16 runs with 1 wicket lost at a run rate of 3.20.

"Short & Wide: A Dive Into The Deep Third"

When Mushfiqur spots an uncommon loose ball from South Africa, his eyes sparkle with excitement. He feels the urge to pursue it and that's what he does. Though it's not a complete uppercut with full power, most likely due to its narrowness and not enough space to move his arms freely. Mushfiqur still commits to the shot and gives it his all, but unfortunately, it falls short and ends up being caught by deep third. It wasn't the perfect shot, but Gerald Coetzee celebrates it properly nonetheless!

Bangladesh is facing a significant defeat, with a score of 46 for 4 after 12.

"Join The Crowd With C"

In the afternoon, the weather was very humid and hot while the cricket players were hitting the ball far from the boundary line. However, as the day progressed and the weather became cooler and windier, more spectators arrived, but the match became very one-sided. This happened on a public holiday in Mumbai celebrating the Hindu festival of Dussehra.

The situation is turning against Bangladesh in a rapid manner! Following Jansen's back-to-back wickets, Lizaad Williams - who has replaced the injured Lungi Ngidi - manages to make Shakib nick the ball with some slight variation in its movement. Klaasen demonstrates his supreme skills by successfully taking the most challenging catch out of the three he has attempted tonight, diving towards his left and securing the catch in front of the first slip.

After eight overs, Bangladesh is struggling at 32 for 3 and is in a difficult position.

Is De Kock The New Tamim?

Jansen Scores Twice In A Row!

In the initial three overs, Marco Jansen has been bowling at a decent distance from the batsman and at a slightly shorter distance as well. However, when he finally threw a much shorter pitch, Tanzid Tamim was not able to hit it well and ended up glove down the leg side while attempting to pull it.

Hello there! The upcoming ball is heading towards the leg side, but it is not as forceful as a bouncer. It is of average length, and Najmul Hossain Shanto redirects it towards the leg side. Klaasen swiftly dives towards his right to make another catch.

The current score in Bangladesh's cricket match is 30 for 2, and once again their captain is being relied upon to lead the team to victory.

Bangladesh Begins On A Peaceful Note

The amount of times the cricket ball crossed the boundary rope in the initial five overs of Bangladesh's match is 2.

The South Africa fast bowlers are not bowling fiercely and aggressively to make it difficult for the Bangladesh opening batsmen, Litton and Tanzid to play their shots. Instead, the batsmen are taking their time to adjust to the pace of the ball. They are avoiding risky shots and not aiming to hit the ball high in the air. They are adopting similar tactics that they used against India in Pune, where they slowly settled in before accelerating their run-scoring later in the innings.

Presently, the concern is that the team is required to earn a colossal 383 runs, therefore the required speed at which they must achieve this objective will increase rapidly. The score for Bangladesh currently stands at 19 with zero wickets lost after five overs.

De Kock Breaks More Records!

Today, South Africa scored 144 runs in the final 10 overs.

South Africa has been unfairly linked to one 'C' word for a long time, mainly during World Cups. However, this year's World Cup and the 2023 tournament seem to be changing the narrative. Instead of the old 'C' word, the new word is 'carnage.' The South African team has been racking up impressive scores, even going beyond 300 and 350 in ODIs. They have been demolishing bowling attacks of all types, even in difficult conditions. Today, they dominated Bangladesh with their impressive skills.

After playing for 40 overs, they had a score of 238 for 3. Their aggressive batting style in the last 10 overs, for the second consecutive game, showed their dominance. In the previous game against England, they scored 143 runs in the last 10 overs, and today they scored 144 runs. If you add both, they scored a total of 287 runs in the last 20 overs of their last two games.

Klaasen Soars High Once More

Mustafizur, the most seasoned pace bowler, delivered the 47th over. Despite the minute margins for mistakes in a ground like Wankhede, he ended up throwing two full tosses that were hit for sixes on the leg side. However, when he managed to bowl a respectable back-of-length ball, Klaasen hit it accurately and seamlessly, passing the gap between point and deep cover for four. This resulted in a total of 20 runs for the over! Is Klaasen's century a promising possibility?

SA Setting More Batting Records First

South Africa has achieved a feat of scoring over 300 runs for seven consecutive times when batting first in ODIs. The only two other teams to have accomplished this milestone are Australia in 2007 and England in 2019 while they were batting first.

At the same time, de Kock has hit the ball hard and high towards the deep third fielder, but unfortunately, he was caught out by Hasan Mahmud. His total score was a fantastic 174 runs off 140 balls, which included hitting 15 fours and seven sixes. This was almost his highest score in a One Day International game (178). Additionally, it was his 20th century in the format, and he had made three centuries in this World Cup alone. His batting performance was truly remarkable, and it helped South Africa to achieve another impressive total of over 300 runs.

Klaasen Hits 150 In 150th Match, Scores 50

The sun has decreased its strength a bit since the toss, but it is still very warm and humid outside. Despite the fact that De Kock is sweating heavily, he is relying on one approach to gain points: hitting boundaries with his impressive hand-eye coordination. In the 43rd over, he confidently attacks Shakib and lands two fours and two sixes. His last hit, which he manages to strike over the covers, is particularly visually impressive.

In the following turn, he hits two consecutive fours after Shoriful delivers the ball. Then, Klaasen hits a huge six over midwicket boundary, which takes his total score to 50 off only 34 deliveries.

They have scored 39 runs in just two overs and have now reached a total of over 300. There are six more overs remaining in the match.

Firdose poses a relevant question regarding South Africa's cricket team. With Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen both batting in the hot afternoon weather, the team has a dilemma. It's a question of who will perform the duties of wicket-keeping. During de Kock's century performance against Sri Lanka in Delhi, Klaasen took up the wicket-keeping job while de Kock took a break. Similarly, when Klaasen scored his own century against England, he didn't take up the fielding responsibilities, choosing to stay in the locker room wrapped in a towel. Now that both players are on the field together, it remains to be seen if David Miller could step in as the wicket-keeper if need be.

The Wankhede is witnessing a sunset, and more people are arriving. The current innings has only 10 overs left, allowing for an extra fielder (bringing the total to five) outside the 30-yard circle. However, this may not have a significant impact today as the conditions are favorable for batting and the boundaries are short, making it easy to find gaps.

De Kock is doing well even though he might be tired in this hot weather. One over ago, his teammates gave him towels to dry himself off because he was sweating so much. He wiped himself off from his chest to his helmet. De Kock has Klaasen batting with him, who has been trying to hit the ball high in the air a few times. Sometimes the ball hasn't gone very far, but it hasn't been caught either. South Africa has scored 238 runs and have three wickets down after 40 overs. Keep watching to see what happens in the final overs of the game.

Isam shares a statistic stating that over the past four years since the 2019 World Cup, Bangladesh has given up runs at a rate of 8.71 in the final ten overs when playing against South Africa. This is the highest run rate that Bangladesh's bowling team has allowed during the third powerplay when playing against any other team.

Is Bangladesh Approaching Its Downfall?

Our correspondent for Bangladesh, Mohammad Isam, is also present here at Wankhede, and he seems to hold a more pessimistic view of the situation, particularly with regards to Bangladesh.

Currently, Bangladesh appears to be struggling in this match, with their tactics and mindset appearing weak and ineffective in the scorching heat of Mumbai. There have been instances where they have delivered subpar performances, such as when Nasum Ahmed delivered a poorly executed half-track delivery to Heinrich Klaasen during the 35th over. This delivery did not come out of Ahmed's hand correctly, and ended up dropping directly towards the bowler's area. It is possible that the next 15 overs could potentially bring an end to Bangladesh's chances of succeeding in the World Cup. However, with determination and effort, they may be able to exhibit their true potential and prove their worth.

De Kock Scores 3rd Century In 5 Innings

Our South African correspondent, Firdose Moonda, is sitting beside me in the press box at Wankhede. She quickly alerts me when de Kock reaches his 20th ODI century.

Quinton de Kock has participated in two World Cup tournaments previously, but had not scored a single century in either of them. However, in the past five games, he has managed to achieve three centuries and is playing the best cricket of his life. His first century in this tournament was during a match against Sri Lanka, followed by another against a weak Australian attack and his latest against a challenging opposition, with two early wickets lost. South Africa's batting has not been truly tested so far, except for one instance when they had to chase against the Netherlands. They faced minor pressure while batting first against an average Bangladesh attack and lost two wickets early on. However, de Kock was able to rebuild the innings ably with Aiden Markram, which has put South Africa in a favorable position and their middle-order can now score a large number of runs. Temba Bavuma had previously mentioned that de Kock's decision to retire from the format had reduced the burden on him, and his recent performance supports this statement.

Bangladesh Gets Much-needed Relief

Today, Markram got a score of 60 which marks his third successful score of 50 or more in this World Cup.

Who other than the skilled captain brings some comfort to his team. Around the 30th over, Markram likely perceives another chance to attain a boundary and desires to hit the ball towards the covers using Shakib's left-arm spin. Nonetheless, he fails to connect with the ball when trying to take the ball to the air, resulting in a poor shot away from his body and simply lobbing the ball to Litton Das at long-off. Bangladesh's fielding has been suboptimal today, so even an effortless catch is a reason to take a deep breath.

Meanwhile, De Kock is almost at 100 runs. South Africa has scored 169 runs for the loss of three wickets after 31 overs.

South Africa Accelerates Growth

It seems like South Africa aimed to reach a score of 350 or higher by the end of their batting turn. At the halfway point, they had scored 131 with only two players out. De Kock's strike rate was not a concern that day. Markram, who batted slower than his partner, hit two fours off Mehidy on the off side and reached his fifty after facing 57 balls.

South Africa's scoring rate is nearly 5.50 runs per over and the two batsmen are in a good position to increase it later. Is it possible for Bangladesh to take a wicket during these quiet middle overs?

The Bangladeshi spin bowlers have been very neat with their deliveries today. Shakib, the team's captain, made a clever decision to bring Mahmudullah on to bowl his offbreaks after Mehidy's first spell which was very economical. Mahmudullah only allowed one run in his first over, and when South Africa's scoring rate dropped below 5 runs per over, de Kock played an impressive reverse sweep shot. He swung the bat with so much force that the ball soared over the boundary line for a six.

After 18 overs, de Kock has achieved a control rate of 94% while scoring 54 runs off of 50 balls.

Wow, Quinton de Kock is really impressing at the World Cup, right? He has scored two centuries already and now he just hit a fifty in just 47 balls, even though two of his teammates were already out. This isn't the fastest start for South Africa though.

With his dominant lower hand, he has aggressively sliced through the ball, fearlessly taken on the spin bowlers and scored two sixes. He pulled off a spectacular shot against Hasan Mahmud and is well on his way to another impressive performance. He has showcased remarkable stability today, with a current accuracy rate of 94%.

South Africa has scored 92 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in the first 18 overs and it is time for the players to take a break and hydrate.

Mehidy Bowls 7 Consecutive Overs!

Mehidy gave away 25 runs during the first seven overs of the match.

He started off the bowling and maintained a steady and low trajectory from his end. Meanwhile, the left-handed quick bowlers were operating from the other end during the initial powerplay, with only two fielders positioned deep. He mostly aimed for the off-stump line at a decent length for the right-handed batters, mixing it up with a few fuller deliveries. However, he may have gone a bit too far on the fuller side while pitching to de Kock.

Today, de Kock and Mehidy faced off in a cricket match. De Kock managed to score 15 runs off 20 balls, with 11 of those being dot balls. He hit one six and had a strike rate of 75. Although he did hit a straight six earlier in the match, de Kock was mainly careful when facing Mehidy. He utilized his straight bat to hit shots straight down the ground in what is known as the "V" area.

Mehidy's initial performance consisted of bowling seven overs, yielding 25 runs, and resulting in a single wicket.

Mehidy came close to getting Hendricks out before, and now he has dismissed RvDD with his quick offbreak! Similarly to Shoriful, he aimed for the stumps and the batter moved across to play an incorrect shot, completely missing the ball and getting out immediately. Mehidy and Mushfiqur were both confident in their appeal. Although Rassie had the option to challenge the decision, he chose not to review it.

South Africa has scored 36 runs for two wickets in the first eight overs. It's worth noting that Mehidy has had an impressive performance against South Africa in the One Day Internationals, with ten wickets taken in a total of six games, averaging at 26.30 and an economy rate of 5.47.

Shoriful Can Get You If Mehidy Doesn't

Wow, it's really hot outside! The batters got some drinks after playing five overs. I feel sorry for the Bangladesh bowlers and fielders who have to play in this heat. However, I was impressed by Shoriful who replaced Mustafizur after only two overs. He charged in and bowled an accurate inswinger that knocked over Hendricks' middle and off stumps.

In today's cricket match, Bangladesh's priority should be getting some wickets and bowling economically. This is because in this type of game, there is plenty of time to recover from slow overs and achieve a high score towards the end. The current score is 35 for 1, with Rassie van der Dussen playing at No. 3 for South Africa.

Mehidy Almost Gets A Hit!

Mehidy was most likely selected to bowl primarily to de Kock, but instead he bowled his entire first over to Hendricks and came very close to dismissing him as well! Mehidy started off with four deliveries that Hendricks was unable to hit, and on his fifth delivery, Mehidy pitched the ball shorter. Hendricks, who hadn't scored any runs yet, attempted to cut the ball but unfortunately hit it with the outside edge of his bat. The ball went straight to first slip, where Tanzid Hasan Tamim was positioned to make the catch, but the ball slipped through his fingers!

It was possible for South Africa to have lost 6 wickets with only one run on the board but they are currently at 9 runs without losing any wicket after two overs.

Quinton De Kock's 150th ODI Game!

Today is a very important day for Quinton de Kock, as it marks the end of his ODI series. He has already achieved a great feat by scoring two centuries in this World Cup. However, he will face a challenge in the beginning, due to his poor performance against offspin since 2020. He has been dismissed seven times in 18 innings, with an average score of 32.42.

It's no surprise that Shakib decides to entrust the second new ball to offspinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Mehidy has proven himself by taking de Kock's wicket on two occasions out of a total of four innings.

Shakib Returns, Bavuma Absent

This is great news for Bangladesh as their usual captain and outstanding all-rounder has returned to the team. Shakib, who was the Player of the Match in the last ODI World Cup match against these two teams, is back in action.

During their previous match, SA didn't win the toss, but they are fortunate to have won it today. Markram is confident to choose batting for various reasons such as the heat of the day and their recent success against England. Unfortunately, one of their players, Ngidi, has a minor knee injury and will not be participating in the game. As a result, Lizaad Williams will replace him.

Shakib declares that he is in top condition and will replace Towhid Hridoy. He expresses his willingness to bowl first is not an issue for him.

The CSA has declared that Temba Bavuma hasn't completely healed from his gastric sickness which made him miss the game against England. To avoid any risk, he won't be playing in today's match against Bangladesh, and Aiden Markram will take over as captain. Furthermore, Lungi Ngidi has a minor problem with his knee, so he wasn't even considered for selection in today's game.

Bond And Pujara On Match Day

The current situation is that Bavuma is practicing with the bowlers on the field in hot weather. The temperature is at 34 degrees Celsius and the air quality index in Colaba is reading at around 239, which is considered poor. It's quite hazy outside. While inspecting the pitch, Allan Donald was spotted wearing a Bangladesh jersey. Since South Africa won against England recently and due to the high heat and humidity, I anticipate that whichever team wins the toss will decide to bat first.

"Hello Again Mumbai!"

Hello everyone, it's warm and hazy in Mumbai! We're now at the halfway point of the World Cup, with match 23 out of 45 league games. Last night's game was incredible and started the tournament with a bang! Today's game is between Bangladesh and South Africa at Wankhede, the same venue where SA beat defending champions England on Saturday with a massive score. Bangladesh, on the other hand, have only won one game out of their four, whereas SA has done the opposite. Bangladesh will be keen to get another win under their belt and take inspiration from Afghanistan and Netherlands. Today's game promises to be exciting!

It was necessary for BAN to score 335 runs within 222 balls.
