Richard Osman's House Of Games With Sophie Willan
Forget about the Baftas! Following the triumph of the second season of Alma's Not Normal, Sophie Willan receives an incredible opportunity. She's set to compete on Richard Osman's House of Games with Cheryl Baker, Chris Bavin, and fellow comedian Axel Blake.
I first came across Sophie Willan during the Magner's New Comedian final at the Greenwich Festival in 2015 (ah, those were simpler times...). Willan undoubtedly stole the show in a competition that included Lolly Adefope, Chris Washington, Benji Waterstones, and Ingrid Dahle. It was evident that Willan had a unique talent; her stories about her mother’s struggles with heroin addiction were both captivating and hilariously funny. She referred to herself as “Mowgli with a mullet.” I remember judging the event and noting down, “reminds me of Victoria Wood and Caroline Aherne—in a positive way.”
Since that time, Willan has upgraded her haircut and achieved impressive milestones, both as a stand-up comedian and as the creator and star of the BBC comedy "Alma's Not Normal." Much like her comedy routine, the show draws significantly from her personal history and her challenging family background. She has been a strong advocate for topics like mental health and drug addiction, representing a working-class female perspective in a field that is still largely influenced by men from prestigious universities.
Willan was incredibly fun to watch on Taskmaster, and regardless of whether she comes out on top in House of Games this week, I anticipate she’ll be just as engaging as always. But the real question is: Will she be sporting her pink and white Bagpuss-inspired faux fur coat?
