Swiss snowboard cross Olympian Sophie Hediger dies in avalanche
Sophie Hediger, a snowboard cross competitor, tragically passed away at the age of 26 after being buried in an avalanche in Arosa.
On Tuesday, December 24, the Swiss Ski Federation (Swiss-Ski) shared the news, just one day after her death.
The CEO of Swiss-Ski Sport, Walter Reusser, expressed his shock and shared that their thoughts are with Sophie's family, to whom they extend their heartfelt condolences.
The tragic passing of Sophie Hediger has cast a gloom over the Christmas celebrations for the Swiss Ski family.
Hediger earned a silver medal at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer and later participated in both the individual and mixed team snowboard cross competitions at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
Last season, she achieved a major milestone in the FIS World Cup by earning her first podium spot, finishing in second place at St. Moritz in late January. Just a week later, she claimed third place in Gudauri, Georgia.
The emerging talent grew up in Horgen, close to Lake Zurich, but dedicated a lot of her time to freeriding at the Arosa resort, where she tragically lost her life in an accident.
