The Solheim Cup is back as Team Europe takes on Team USA in the 39th installment of this exciting team event, taking place at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia.

Europe is the reigning champion and will compete for an unprecedented fourth consecutive Solheim Cup after an exciting 14-14 tie in Spain last year enabled Suzann Pettersen's team to keep the trophy.

Pettersen is back as the captain for Europe, while Stacy Lewis will once again lead the USA team. The home side will have a vibrant and enthusiastic crowd cheering them on, adding excitement and energy to the competition.

The United States boasts the top two players in the world this year, Nelly Korda and Lilia Vu. Meanwhile, Team Europe will be captained by England's Charley Hull and Ireland's Leona Maguire, who maintained a steady presence in the competition last year.

The Solheim Cup will take place in back-to-back years for now, but starting in 2024, it will revert to being held only in even-numbered years. The tournament was held in both 2021 and 2023 after the 2020 event was delayed because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Here’s all the essential information you should be aware of before the 2024 Solheim Cup.

When Will The Opening Pairings Be Announced?

Captains Suzann Pettersen and Stacy Lewis will announce their first pairings for the morning foursome matches at the opening ceremony on Thursday.

Understanding The Solheim Cup Format

The match takes place over three days, with the first two featuring both a morning and an afternoon session.

During the morning sessions, the teams will compete in four foursomes matches. In this format, two golfers from each team join forces and take turns hitting the same ball. The team with the lowest score on each hole wins that hole, and if they have the same score, it results in a tie.

During the afternoon rounds, the teams face off in four fourball matches. Each team consists of two golfers who play together, but they each use their own ball. For each hole, the team's overall score is determined by the lower score from either player, and the hole is won by the player with the best score.

Participants are allowed to compete in all four sessions during the initial two days. However, with only eight spots open in each session, some members of the 12-player team must sit out each round. It's required that every player takes part in at least one session over these first two days.

On the last day, players go head-to-head in singles matches, with each member of Team Europe facing off against a member of Team USA. These matches follow the usual match play format, where the player with the lowest score on each hole takes the win. Every player from both teams is required to participate in these individual matches.

A total of 28 points are available, with teams earning one point for a victory in a match or half a point each in the case of a tie after 18 holes. Similar to last year, if the overall score is tied at 14-14 by the end of Sunday, the defending champions (Team Europe) will keep the trophy.
