Met Office snow warning extended by more than 24 hours
A current yellow weather warning for snow and ice has been prolonged through Thursday.
The Met Office's yellow warning for snow and ice was scheduled to expire at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
Due to significant overnight snowfall and icy conditions across many northern areas, and with more snow showers anticipated, an additional warning has been issued. This warning will be in effect from 10 AM today until noon tomorrow.
In response to the latest alert, a representative from the Met Office stated, "Scattered snow showers are expected to impact various northern and western regions of Scotland from Wednesday and continue into Thursday morning."
There will be frequent rain showers, which could also include some hail. In many areas, snow accumulation is expected to be between two to five centimeters, with some places, particularly in the northwest of the mainland, seeing up to 10 centimeters of snow.
"At elevations above approximately 300 meters, it is expected that between 15 to 20 cm of snow could build up during this time. Additionally, ice is likely to form on untreated surfaces, especially after sunset, posing an extra risk."
The updated warning zone includes many of the same areas as the current alert.
It includes the regions of Caithness, Sutherland, Ross-shire, Inverness-shire, Nairn-shire, Moray, and the northern part of Aberdeenshire. Additionally, it spans the islands of Shetland and Orkney, as well as all the Inner and Outer Hebrides, Lochaber, and Argyll & Bute.
