‘Skeleton Crew’ Is Now The Best Reviewed Disney Star Wars Project Besides ‘Andor’
The struggling Disney Star Wars franchise has successfully discovered a winning formula.
Skeleton Crew, with its adventurous vibe reminiscent of The Goonies, has launched with minimal backlash and outstanding review ratings, marking a significant victory for a brand that has been struggling lately. With the reviews now available, Skeleton Crew boasts the highest ratings among Disney's Star Wars offerings, second only to Andor, and they're very close in score. This even encompasses the films. Here's the complete rundown:
You'll also see that Skeleton Crew has consistent audience ratings, as it stands alongside three other projects, all scoring between 86% and 87%. Achieving such high ratings is no small feat, especially considering how picky Star Wars fans can be.
It’s simply… enjoyable? Delightful? Although it certainly draws inspiration from films like The Goonies and E.T., it stands strong on its own. This project comes from co-creator Jon Watts, who is known for directing Marvel’s highly successful Spider-Man films with Tom Holland, so it’s not surprising to see a certain level of quality here (though he also recently wrote and directed Wolfs for Apple TV+, which didn’t quite achieve standout success).
Skeleton Crew is designed to be a fresh entry point into the Star Wars universe for younger viewers. However, even though it's targeted at children and draws inspiration from beloved kids' films, it's enjoyable for audiences of all ages. It includes intriguing mysteries that long-time Star Wars fans will appreciate. The young actors deliver strong performances and are backed by a solid script. Jude Law joins the cast as a charismatic force user, and there's also a robot pirate serving as the first mate. What’s not to love?
There have been whispers that Disney is interested in making Skeleton Crew a permanent series. However, even though the show has potential, Disney still faces the challenge of balancing viewership with budget constraints. Like all of its productions, Skeleton Crew comes with a hefty price tag. Additionally, it doesn't feature any well-known Star Wars characters or actors that might attract viewers. This is a similar issue that The Acolyte encountered, and even though Skeleton Crew appears to be a stronger series, that won't guarantee its success if it fails to draw in an audience. Let’s hope it does!
