Simon Bird, one of the stars of The Inbetweeners, has dampened fans' hopes for a reunion of the Channel 4 sitcom, stating that it doesn't seem likely to happen.

The comedy had a very successful run from 2008 to 2010, leading to the release of two movies that both became significant box office successes in the UK.

Although the series continues to be well-liked on streaming platforms, the actors from The Inbetweeners—Bird, James Buckley, Joe Thomas, and Blake Harrison—have mostly played down the idea of creating any new installments.

That is, until not long ago, when remarks made by Thomas on the Always Be Comedy podcast sparked new excitement about the possibility of a third movie.

He informed MailOnline, "It's not going to happen. I can assure you with certainty that there are no chances of a reconciliation."

"[The cast would] love to do it, but it's not in our hands; it's really up to the writers, Iain [Morris] and Damon [Beesley]. I know they've got a lot on their plates these days. Unfortunately, it's just as unlikely to happen now as it was a decade ago."

Bird added, "I believe it was a comedy that was very much of its era. So, to answer your question, there haven't been any talks about making a new show or movie."

The actor, who is currently featured in the Channel 4 comedy Everyone Else Burns, mentioned that he hasn't seen The Inbetweeners since he worked on it back in 2008 and that he "doesn't recall" a lot of the lines fans quote to him.

"I'm completely lost about what they mean," he said.

Bird has mentioned that bringing back The Inbetweeners with the cast now in their late 30s or early 40s could end up feeling "awkward and uncomfortable." Meanwhile, his co-star Buckley has stated that no amount of money could persuade him to reprise his role as Jay, as he discussed in an interview with Spencer Matthews on Big Fish.

That's why it was quite unexpected to hear Thomas express such hopeful thoughts about the idea last month. He mentioned that the possibility of a reunion project had been explored in "different ways" and that "everyone thinks it would be wonderful."

Thomas added, "We're all still here, actively involved in each other’s lives. We still have a good bond. And if the opportunity arose, I believe we would be interested in pursuing it."

It might be a good idea for the group to gather and align their thoughts, but for the moment, we recommend not expecting The Inbetweeners 3 to be released anytime soon.
